What your microphone, pre-amp set up?

I thought this was a thread devoted to just the vocal setup. Some of these are pretty extensive. Im known for going in direct but sometimes you dont have a pickup.

So for Harp SM58 through a Levelar into a sansamp GT2.

Blue Dragonfly,old Audio Tecnica dynamic

DBX mini pre,Mackie 1202 pre's

Looking now for a setup for recording acoustic and vox at the same time, probably 2 603's and a good back electret?

chessparov,
I noticed you have a Shure sm87a,have you used it for recording vocals,if so how does it compare to your large diaphram mics?

I use Neumann U87s, CAD C400Ss, or Shure KSM32s through Avalon Mic pres for vocals and acoustic instruments.

Re: Shure Beta 87a

muzeman, for home recording the Shure Beta 87c (cardiod) is supposed to
sound a bit better than my 87a (supercardiod). My 87 has the trademark
Shure sound that's suited for rock vocals so it's fun to mess around with.
The Studio Projects C1, however, sounds so nice it forced me "back into
the closet". If I rated the C1 as a 10 for it's sound the 87 would be a 7.
For a live mike, however, the Beta 87's are in their element and sound
great.

P.S. how do you like the DBX mini pre?

I have (temporarily) 3 pre's - Behringer mixer, DBX mini, and ART Tube - I hope to record some short clips w/the AT mic and each pre-amp, and post them for comparison. Maybe this weekend, if I have the time........

mikeh - how do you like the voicemaster. Was thinking about saving for one. What applications do you use it for?

chessparov,
Thanks for the info on the 87,helped me out a lot.
Mabey I should get a C-1and use that on vocals, the Dragonfly on acoustic, and just mix the two together.Wonder how that would sound?
Ah well the quest goes on.

The DBX is a great little box, functional well built and clean, what more could you ask for at $99?
I really like it.

Thanks,
Pete

The pre on the Voicemaster is pretty good (I think it compares well to the MP20). The EQ is somewhat limited (but I don't find it a huge issue - since I try to be selective with use of EQ). The compressor does the job.

I wanted a channel strip rather then just a mic pre -(already had mic pre's) to use directly to hard drive - and it does a reliable job, for my needs.

As a channel strip it does the job - I think if I could do it over I would get the Prosonus VSX instead (I'm a fan of Prosonus gear) - but I got the Voicemaster at a little under dealer cost, which was a key deciding factor.

I have used the Voicemaster for male and female lead vocals and a male talk over (I haven't used it for any instruments yet).

Use the 57 for close micing guitar amps. The 4033 is a new toy, so I am still waiting for it to grow on me, I had the NT1 dialed in nicely.

Re: Aphex 107

manchild, how do like the Aphex 107 compared to your other mic pre's?
(I have an aphex 107 too)

Aphex 107

Hey chess!

I have not used the Aphex 107 in a while. I should try it one of these day's whith some of my mic's. But I mostly use the Joe Meek
I really like it and the color it give's to recording R&B singers, however I did use the 107 on rappers, they seem to like it alot. Maybe I will try it on my new Studio Project C-1 mic????
