I was just reading an article in PC Magazine (the March 8, 2005 issue) by Bill Machrone (http://go.pcmag.com/machrone) about some new voice coach software called "Singing Coach Unlimited" Apparently it's interactive, comes with mic and headphones, keeps track of progress, listens to your singing and displays actual pitch and duration of your voice, scores you on accuracy, runs you through a tutorial on breathing, head and chest voices, and so on. Samples your voice to determine if your a baritone, bass, alto, soprano, etc. I think it's $99--so it ain't cheap.
Personally, I have no idea whether it's any good or not, but the PC Mag guy seemed to think it was worth an article. Probably find info on it at www.caryatune.com.
By the way, I'm not hawking the software here. Never heard about it before last week, never used it, no ties to the company, nothing. Just coincidentally happened to read about it recently and thought it may be an alternative for you.

Also, the recent issue of Performing Songwriter had some stuff on vocal health problems that was very interesting--since this thread took a turn that way as well, I thought I'd throw that in to the mix too.

I didn't feel that you were spamming with that info, Folkie. I read that same article. I was intrigued, but not enough to spend 100 bucks on it...

Thanks, Rokket. We're in the same frame of mind there. And I don't have a spare C-note even if I was that intrigued. Still, it was an interesting coincidence that I saw the post just after reading the article....

Coincidence (or substitute a word that starts with "s" ;) ) happens... And you never know... There may be someone out there who could use it, and can afford to drop a Ben Franklin....

OK, that's too many inferences to $100 bills....!

Recording yourself , even if its on your computer through your line-in is a really good way to tell make clear what your doing wrong when singing....also...i found it really helpful to by a music backing track of one my favourite cd's and then recording my voice over it and then listening to the original song with the real singer and my version....and one point i got silverchair's tomorrow to sound better than the real version(in my opinion at least)
