I am looking into buying a mid range preamp with or without compressor. I have a Rode NT1A mic. For vocals and acoustic guitar recording into Yamaha 2816. Everyone's got an opinion and I know there are killer units for $1000 but from what I read but I've it narrowed down to:

ART Pro Channel
M-Audio DMP3 with RNC compressor
SM Pro Audio TB202

I asked SM Pro Audio about TB202. They didn't sell me. Their THD + N didn't look so hot. But they offer Class A amplifier and dual with compressor. Rip Rowan likes ART Pro Channel--can he be trusted or is he a spy!

If you have a serious view on these or have compared performance, please advise. thanks.
Cheers!

They say good things about the RNP and the RNC around here... as well as the DMP3... try the search function...

Check into the Joe Meek TwinQ. Not sure about the price, but I think its in that range. Stereo preamp, with compressor. Good deal, if you like the Meek color.

Get a small Mackie or something similar w/ the RNC..Perhaps "Tap" the inserts you will gain some clearity! Use some good mics and placement and you will get further along!..Save some cash IMNSHO ya ain't gonna jump that high sonicly with those choises and price range preampwise..Good luck :)

I would get the RNC + a separate preamp

Small budget:

1-channel:
Studio Projects VTB-1
Rane MS1B

2-channels:
DMP3

Mid-Priced:

1-channel:
Groove Tubes "The Brick"
Grace 101

2-channels:
RNP

What did you record with?

Handsome Al,
Thanks for the reply. Can you advise what pre did you record the songs on your site with. Southern Road and prozac.....

The high strings sounded good. The vocals had a lot of color and verb.

Understood on saving cash....gotta start somewhere.

What do you mean by "Tap the inserts" I'm a green horn remember, but I learn fast.
