What vocal mic would you use for a Kurt Cobain/ Mark Sandman/ Tom Waits/ Gordan Gano type voice?

What would you use for around $500, what about $1,000 - $2,000?

Thanks,

Whatever mic I used I'd put a heavy duty pop shield in front of it (and a baggy over it).

MCo12 for vocals? I've tried it in the past, but only to quickly demo a song when it was the only mic handy. Surely the Rode will do a better job?

if i'm singing, the rode wins clearly, but on a scream the o12 is a bit more raw.

but that's me.

I like dynamics for these sorts of voices if you don't want exacting fidelity. The Beyer Soundstar MKII (long discontinued), the EV RE20 and the Shure SM7 each can be the best mic in the world when put through a great mic pre such as the Great River MP-2NV.

All good recommendations, I concur.
