What is your excuse for not using a Studiomix?

I have been using my studiomix for 2 weeks now and what a wonderful experience. Finally feel like a real enginner for having knobs and buttons to play around. ;)

I think this is really a great piece of gear to use with cakewalk. With its sub$200 price tag in ebay, it's almost a no-brainer!

The motorised faders are cool too, but I am still not that comfortable with automated mixing....

My only small complaint is the lack of LCD display. SOmetimes I am confused as which tracks the faders are actually pointing to after switching banks....

Highly recommended!

Here's a pic of the studiomix

hey mosk,
how do you like that evolution controller? I'm looking at one on ebay that's a buy it now for $74 plus about $12 shipping.

Do you think it's worth it? I'd be using it for cubase SX and Reason.

Go get it! I'm very happy with it... :)

Long Live Strongbad... :D

I just pulled my Peavey StudioMix out of an old box and want to see how (if?) it works with Sonar3. Anyone try it yet on Sonar3 ?

I want to automate some functions in the ultracurve DEQ2496 mastering dynamic equalizer and RTA.

It works (apparently) with Sonar 2, so I'm sure it works with Sonar 3... ;)

You don't need a hardware controller to use automation. Just set up some envelopes! :)

My excuse is that I really don't know why I should use one. Haven't tried it though. But for the things I want to do, moving onscreen faders work okay.

And what if you have more tracks than this can accomodate? Bypassing effects? Changing midi patches while playing? Can you really avoid using the screen, or will you jump between screen and Studio Mix.

As I said I never tried one, so I may just be plain stupid.

I don't think the StudioMix will cut that much "mouse-time", but the Mackie Controller surely will... ;)

Thanks Moscus !
I had an aural vision of using the controller on 2 (or more) parameters that would interact and make a great sound but you're right - maybe I'll just get the automation going first - then add complexity !

Not so, apparently. I read on the Sonar newsgroup that Cakey ommitted support for it in Sonar 3.

But apparently they plan to add it back in a later update. Bit strange if you ask me.

I have owned a studiomix for about a year. I bought it for $110 from a Nun off Ebay (no lie).

1. It does cut down on mousing, especially during recording. It's so nice to get back to faders you can touch.

2.Studiomix worked great with Sonar 2.x but is not working as well in 3. Native support is not active in 3. Meaning you can't have Sonar 3 move the studiomix faders. You can use the Cakewalk Generic Surface Control on the Studiomix. There is 4 presets for the Studiomix. One is "Arm for Automation" another is "Arm for Recording", "Mute" and "solo".

Using the generic control surface: the studiomix runs Sonar but Sonar can't talkback. the SM's channel faders, the channel button, and lower endless pot works. The main channel on the SM does not. The inner part of the Jog/shuttle works (is that the jog or shuttle?) but it only moves 1 measure (?) per click. None of the 4 programable buttons to the right of the master channel work. Play record and stop work. The arrows left and right move per measure as the jog/shuttle does. I would guess you could program the controll surface setup to work to a greater degree than I have outlined above. I just haven't delved into that because I am waiting for the update.

As it is now (in ver 3) it works ok for recording but for post production it's too limited.

All in all, when it works as it's supposed to I love the damn thing. It's a diamond in the rough.

Well, since I am largely recording myself, I won't be able to use it during recording. Guess that coulb be my excuse for not using it, if you want one.

Let's have a picture of the Mackie too ... and the price.

Here ya go. Cost me just under 2 grand CDN last year. However, the U.S. dollar has tanked so I'm sure it can be had for significantly cheaper.

The room on the other hand... well.... save your pennies :)

Looks nice. You already have a black keyboard to go with it, so all you need now is a black flatscreen like I have for the sake of integrity.

I'm waiting for pixel response times to hit 10ms, then I'll buy a flatscreen.
