What I'm Asking For For My Birthday

My birthday is in 3 weeks. If I get the MM I'll post my impressions.

Is it my imagination or was the original Melody Maker a 3/4 sized guitar? One of the better stocked shops in town-one with the nice older used guitars-had one a few months back and was much smaller than that one. It had a double cut-away body too.

That body appears to have Les Paul dimensions, I wonder what the body routing looks like under the pickguard though. I think a different pickguard would make it look a lot better-I prefer mine without a pickguard at all anyway.

Originally, Melody Makers came in both full and 3/4 size with 3/4 guitars being quite popular. The first issues were single cut and looked very much like this new one. Almost all of them were sunburst. Gibson later produced two different double cut versions and a later SG style. The fretboard on many of these is somewhat narrower than other Gibson models.

The pickups on those guitars were not p-90s but were a single coil unique to the Melody Makers and a low end SG. I never cared for the sound of them. They were weak, thin sounding things. The plastic covers obscure the pole pieces.

I understand the pickups on the new issue are not reproductions of the original design.

It will be interesting to hear what the modern pickups sound like.

I had a Gibson SG with a set of single coils on it I got when I was still learning-I think it was a L-100 or something like that. The pickups were covered with a black plastic with the word 'Gibson' molded into them and a chrome ring around them. It played nice but the pickups were pretty mediocre from my memory.
I have tried to find it online but all I find is a large bodies acoustic, have any of you ever saw one of these? Any help is appreciated. :)

I had one of those once ..... don't remember much about it ..... I sold it cheap in an emergency situation to get money for a vet to save a stray dog I'd found.
Didn't have chrome rings though .... just black.

I wonder why that one didn't go? Looks like a good deal on a vintage Gibson.
Maybe the neck was shot or something to late to ask questions now I guess

Yeah, thats what it looked like, same pickup and chrome ring-mine had 2 pickups and didn't have the slant that neck pickup has though. Thanks for the picture, it brings back memories! :D

Apparently my memory has lapsed on what it looked like. I think that this is the guitar I had in the mid-1970's, after I saw the picture it probably did have a slanted neck pickup and slider switches for the pickups. Also a Tele style control panel. The photobucket picture is pretty much the guitar I remember having.

The image is an SG-200 refinished-it shows a bit more detail..

I wonder what that Melody Maker would sound like with a couple of Hot Rails installed?
i was thinking of getting one of those and putting barden strat deluxes into it :D which would probably yield similar results

No you gave me green-I need to start selling some of this rep-I'm running out of storage!! ;)

Yeah I think that Melody Maker will be fine-I think a bit of modding will make it exceptional!

You know, already I'm thinking that some Seymour Duncan stacked rail HBs, with a push-pull pot for coil splitting both pickups simultaneously, would be really cool. Hot Rails might be more gain than I want, but Vintage Stacks or Hot Stacks (or a combo thereof) might work. That way I could keep the single coil sound but get some HB action going, too.

i have a usa g&l legacy with a bridge jb jr. (great pickup!) installed into the neck. it's awesome because i generally use the neck for leads and it has way more output than the fender red lace sensor i have in the bridge (it was like 1994-- i was young :o).

Well, it's on the way....

Kewl, I should be getting the Melody Maker by the end of the week. I also ordered one of those cheap Musician's Friend LP hard cases ($35.00  ) - the case is back-ordered but the guitar has been shipped.

I'll let y'all know what a dirt cheap Gibson is like. :D

Ooooooo Zaphod!!! Now those are what I call centerfolds!!! Great taste!! :D

I hope ya get what you are wanting!

(Won't have a chance to play with it much tonight - I'll be attending my younger daughter's 8th grade "promotion" ceremony.)
