What happened to CAD?

It's a shame that quality mics by CAD, Shure, AT, EV and a few other companies can't get the viral marketing hype that a couple of brands seem to get over and over again.

It's interesting to note that the companies who distribute certain brands aren't actually "microphone manufacturers" as much as they are marketing companies. Marketing and branding (and distributing) is their main business, so naturally it's something they are well-suited for.

The other companies you just mentioned, interestingly enough -- CAD, Shure, AT, EV -- are microphone companies. Sure, they have a brand name, but the brand isn't their business as much as the microphone is. Sometimes their marketing takes a back seat, while others can simply rest on years of reputation (ala Shure or EV).

And it is too bad that more people don't seem to realize this. The better products, in my book, are being made by microphone companies, as opposed to the "brands," whose main order of business is to slap a label on something and market it as something unique or different. I'm perplexed at how so many different labels can be given to the same mic ... and how they can be even be tailored to a particular market segment with different price points. Pretty clever stuff.

I play fiddle in a bluegrass band and I'd never played through a CAD before until this past weekend... I'm not sure what the model was though... We played through the 'house' system and that's what they had... I was happy with it as far as I could tell for live sound...

The CAD VSM is an outstanding mic and can be had at AMS for $479.00.
Holy audio distortion Batman! Where can I 'drum up' $500 I wonder?

I just picked up seven of their mics in the drum package. Two ICM 417s (SDC), four TSM 411s (dynamic instrument/tom mic) and one KBM 412 (the kick mic). I haven't used them yet but I've heard good things about the small condensers. The kick looks to be VERY hyped in the low end. 25db boost around 55-65hz. I might stick with the AKG D-112 like I've been using. Maybe this CAD mic will work well on bass or floor tom though.

The nice thing about AMS is that they let you pay in three installments and you don't have to sign up for anything.

Well, I don't know how you can tell by looking at it but wait until you hear it. I think you'll be seriously underwhelmed...might be a good mic for a hip hop kick if you want some boom...

The mic came with a one-sheet with a graph of its frequency response. I'll use it as a floor tom mic.

I have one of the e300's (the big one, not the smaller redesigned one). I dig it a lot! I got a great deal on mine used.
