to mic the amp, but it turned out horrible, i couldnt get a good sound out of it at all, it sounded horribly scratchy

It is waaaaaaayyy toooooooo eeeeeeasy to either overdrive the mic diaphragm (too close to the speaker with the amp turned up too loud) or overdrive the preamp input that the mic is connected to. "horribly scratchy" is a perfect description of preamp distortion, especially if its a solid state preamp. Does the term "horribly scratchy" mean it almost sounded like that buzzy fizzy noise you get like wax paper on a comb or a high pitch kazoo type distortion??? If so, then it's a good bet you are hearing preamp overdrive or mic distortion. Sometimes the speaker itself is spitting out a high freq distortion that's part of the guitar sound, and your ears wont notice it from across the room but the mic will pick it up......and it aint a purdy sound!

The SM57 is a good mic, especially for guitar speakers, so if it sounds scratchy, then the mic is not being placed correctly or the gain is not set correctly.....Or......heaven forbid......maybe the amp is too loud. I hate to say it, cuz I would be the last one to say a guitar is too loud!! But you gotta do whatever it takes to get good sound going thru the mic!

If you can turn the amp down, try that first. If the amp has to be loud, then try changing where you put the mic, farther away, not lined up on center of the speaker cone, maybe off-axis (pointed at the ceiling but still 1 or 2 feet in front of the amp), etc...... experiment.

You SHOULD be able to get good sound with that mic.......

AWESOME mic, I have two of them, and they are great. I'd like to have a whole chest full! ;-)

This Nady RSM2 ribbon mic is identical to the Apex 210. But the Apex 210 comes inside a cordura bag inside an aluminum foam padded case so you can store it upright in a solid metal container, and the mic cable is integrated so you dont have to buy an extra cable.....

The Nady is $199 all over the web, but the Apex 210 is $153 from fullcompass.com! Same manufacturer, different distributor......

if the tone thru a 57 or i5 pointed right at the cone is bad, then your tone source is bad... assuming your gain stages are set correctly from preamp on...

Do you have any samples available of a guitar amp recorded with with the rsm2 or 210?

I like the sE R1 Ribbon for guitar amp along with the AEA R92.

I also like the SM57 if you got high quality mic preamp to put it through.

Sorry, I dont have any samples.....I've never used my 210 on my cab, only for voice. And I did not have a lot to compare it to, like I dont have any high dollar LDC's to compare it to, only what I remember from my old mic-renting days.

But of all the budget stuff I have or had, ND757, ND767, ND967, SM86, AT3032, NT5, SM57, SM58, AT4040, RE20, and C414, the 210 ribbon is by far the best for my voice thru my gear. Unfortunately, I have the wrong 414 for voice, and the RE20 was the only one that could stand up next to the ribbon, even though it is a budget ribbon. So I use the 210 only for voice. I sold all the ND vocal mics, I kept the ND468 for the guitar cab, I kept the RE20, I kept the 414's and the 3032 for acoustic guitar, unfortunately the 4040 was rented, and I gave the SM's to my brother.

That SE R1 ribbon is a lot of mic just for a guitar cab, BUT I've heard and read that is is a really nice sounding ribbon. If I had the $$$$$$ to burn, I would own one myself.

Oz is right about the preamp. Someone else mentioned a while back (it was probably Harvey!) that a guy really should look at the preamp+mic combination is one piece of the signal chain. My own basement side by side tests proved to me that changing either piece of gear can make or break the sound. Changing the mic can totally alter your opinion of the preamp, which in my estimation would be a mistake in judgment.

However, more appropriate me thinks, is the fact that changing the preamp can totally alter your impression of a mic. I have recently convinced myself that a guy should have at least one solid state preamp and one tube preamp, just because any given mic can sound soooooo different depending on what type of pre you run it thru.

IMHO, the preamp doesn't matter as much with condenser mics as it does with ribbons and dynamics. On condensers, quality preamps moreso help you hear the differences between different condenser mics.

At some point though you just need to shut up and hit record. :)

That is what my test clips showed me, also.......the C414 thru the solid state pre and the C414 thru the tube pre sounded almost identical, but the RE20 sounded like a different mic thru one instead of the other. Good point.....

My Nady's have an integrated cable, but only a padded nylon case, and a Alum. case would be great. Maybe I'll pick up a couple more from fullcompass.com, TNX much!
