what does a hip hop artist need around him/her?

Excellent point! There is so much good music out there getting shelved because
Ashlee Simpson, or whoever, has a record coming out in a few weeks and attention is focused on convincing the sheep that it's worth $18. This plagues the industry. Any idea's of how this will change?

Ashlee Simpson is really no different than someone like Ja Rule, they're both fake as shit, corporate pawns. Although Ashlee doesn't pretend to be anything but a corporate pawn pop singer. Ja Rule thinks he's a thug, and an actor, and he's just a little midget with no acting talent AT ALL, and I'm a bigger thug than Ja Rule is (I'm a white boy from small town Minnesota by the way).

The only way it's gonna change is if people stop buying shitty records. Instead of picking up that new "joint" by Chingy, go pick up something good like MF Doom, instead of getting the new single from that lady who sings that "1, 2, Step" pile of shit pick up some actual R&B like Aretha Franklin. Fuck MTV, fuck BET, fuck VH1, fuck MTV2, fuck all that shit, that's the only way anything is going to change.

and you tryin to make a livings doin this right...you just cut out abut 40% of you business..think about it..everyone whatch tv to say..yeah im goint to by that..just my 2 cents

I know what you're saying, but all that is on MTV is shit. For one thing, they play videos about 10% of the day. Music TV should not be for "My super sweet 16" and "The Real World" that has NOTHING to do with music. That's a different topic though.

You aren't going to make your living getting on MTV because 99% of you guys (myself included) will never be on MTV. You need a major label to shell out hundreds and thousands of dollars to get your shit on MTV. Why do you think amazing underground artists that people like aren't on there? Because their labels aren't big enough to shell out $50,000 worth of payola to get on MTV. Make your living by playing shows, selling cd's and merch, and touring. The odds are that you you suck and you aren't gonna get a deal. I see people talking about how they're going platinum, but they suck. A friend of mine had a group in his studio a week ago or so, and they stole Destiny's Child's new song and rapped over it. That's stupid! Plus they were talking about how they were already platinum. THEY WEREN'T!!! Stop being "bling bling, bently driving, crystal drinking" dipshits! Get some fucking substance to your music, get a following, and change the game forever! Have you ever heard of Tupac? What songs about bling did he have? There may have been a couple braggers, but he had substance to his lyrics. I don't care about the fucking Hummer you want, that's not good lyrics. I know people listen to it, and it's sad. Someone needs to come along and change everything the way Tupac did, the way Biggie did, the way Nirvana did. This shit just needs to stop.

leave ciara and rule and ashlee alone.
if someone backed up the money truck to your door don't act like you wouldn't take the money and get it cracking. that's all they did. that doesn't make them the problem. that makes them smart.
i ain't bought not one of their albums, but i don't FAULT others for having done so. I can't boogie to MF DOOM while i'm cleaning the kitchen. but you best believe that 1, 2 Step is on point for it!
Get over it. Stop hating the next man, cause truth be told: not everyone likes tupac. some people think he was an arrogant bastard (i'm one of them)
and "it's check out time" and "thugs passion" aren't exactly music for the revolution.

Get off a dead man's dick, it's hard to breathe

If you're not a female, I think you're ready to come out of the closet if you're not already, boogie to when I'm cleaning the kitchen- change your damn signature.

Why has this turned into a battle of whos good and whos not? I would have thought everyone who makes posts on this site knows that everyone each of their own has different opinions on music. If someone likes an artist you dont, fine, why should anyone mock them? Music is Music, If its Rock, Rap, Dance or even Pop, You can have discussions on what you like, but why should it start an argument?? Its a shame if even real musicians like all of us are arguing whos good and whos crap...

hmmmmmm.
let's try to stick to the subject here, eh?
and for your info, for those of us who have BOUGHT a HOUSE,
we can't wait for moms or lil sis to handle the dishes.
but judging by your response, you're probably not old enough to appreciate that.

you're right.
i apologize to all who were offended.

just please don't make the man into a martyr or a prophet when he didn't believe that foolishness himself.
and some people have more important things to worry about than "i'm a bigger thug than he is", so not everyone will feel me on that.

but oh well.
i gotta go do laundry...

Attitudes like yours are the problem why hip hop is laughed at by real musicians, and not given any respect. It is also the reason it doesn't sound original because of its reliance on sampling other people's work.
 Hear we go with the real music debate. Fuck a "real" musician, hip hop is based off exactly what that man is doing, having and idea, maybe not having the money or the means to get the idea out of your head, and still being able to get your point across artisitcally. Real musicians  Some people dont have the oppurtunities or the money to try and play an instrument, some people come up in hip hop music nowadays like some one would in Jazz, or Rock. Hip Hop is real music, look around, fuck a musician who thinks otherwise.

Umm... What does an artist need

1. Creativity
2. Perception
3. Intelligence
4. FLOW
5. CONCEPTS
6. SOME PLACE TO RECORD
7. A LIL MONEY
8. SOME REAL FOLKS.

ALL THAT OTHER BULLSHIT, REALLY DOESN'T MATTER CHIEF, CAUSE YOU CAN BE A LOCAL HIP HOP ARTIST iF THAT'S ALL YOU ASPIRE TO BE. NOT EVERYONE WANTS TO BE ALL OVER TV. HIP HOP IS BIGGER THAN WHAT ANY OF US THINKS.

clone boy every where i go u seem to criticize...i seem to be the exact oppisite of your thought on every thing hiphop. I play 3 instruments, piano, violin, and guitar . i also earned and and assoc. degree at 17 in MUSIC.....which mean's i can read music very well, and i completed all required music theory courses :p ....i am currently attending ST MARY UNIVERSITY in San Antonio,Tx work towards a BA in MISIC INDUSTRY STUDIES  .... YOUR JUST A BITTER "MUSICIAN"
I agree with you that hes bitter. I from all the engineering he does, I don't know where he finds the time to post all these negative posts all over the place.
With that being said, i want to say that theory and music classes are necessary for some people. I seem to have a bit of a "musical ear". Never taken a lesson in piano, bass, drums or guitar. Sit me at a piano with bethoven on and I can listen to it for 15 minutes and have it down. I'm not, however, saying that music classes are a waste. I'm only 18, don't take my opinion too seriously :)

Easy

Let's see. Water, Food & Shelter. A good lawyer (pre-nup's & baby-mamma agreements), a trustworthy accountant (where the HELL you'll find that I don't know), a goal, a plan and a desire to do the work to get there and stay there. And like someone else said...customers...OH and how could i forget. God, whether you believe in it or not, you gotta have some sort of higher power in this biz or you'll go batty.

No.

There are just a lot of talentless people out there that think mumbling over a beat equals music.
