I know an artist needs a manager
what else does an artist need?

a manager???

out of all the things u can think of......well if u say so...what an artist needs...not just hiphop, but any artist-is talent along with the drive to make it happen. i've found dat half the people who wanna become artist dont have enough discipline.they dont put the time into "their" craft. there is alot of people misrepresenting what the art form. there's alot less individuality(is it me or do alot of today artist's sound exactly the same)but in short what i'd probably say u need most is just to KNOW what ur getting into and to have something different to offer.....there's only gonna be so many camron's, lil jon's, jay-z's snoop's, dre's, eminem's, 50's, swisha house's- u get the picture....so be who god has blessed u too be- let the world see what he's blessed u too see....AND BY ALL MEAN HIT`EM WIT DA HEAT*one.

You need a posse. Find as many no talent friends as you can get to hang around with you and mooch off of you when you get paid.
Other than that a little street cred wouldn't hurt.

for what so he or she can rap about killin and get away with it. being from the street aint nothing to be glorified(there that misrepresentation i was talkin about ) i've been in the street most of my life not for creditibilty....because my dad was not around. i was tryin( and still am) to give my brothers and sisters a better life... i learned to cook crack at 12 because that was how i survived not for no damn jordan tennis shoes, cars, clothes.....man all dat stuff is gonna wait when u starvin, or ya electricity about to be off. if i had a choice i would have did so much different in my younger life...Jay-z said the street claim lives...but u dont have to die for it too happen... i didnt have a childhood...and another thing, because i'm from the streets doesnt say that i'm dumb either or that all i know is killin and bling blingin...i graduated from highschool at 15 because i was in such a hurry to start a career and get off the block.the streets aint an image i'd portray unless i lived it.i'm 21 years old and i feel like i'm 40 cuz of all dat i've seen or been forced to do. if u r gonna portray or imitate make it something positive.

i hope it didnt seem like i was giving my life story but sometimes god really moves ya heart...i got tears runnin down my face right now cuz i wish i had a choice....make the right one*one

man this guy got me hype.. Dont mean to jack ya thread but if I could get some crit on the music id appreciate it www.soundclick.com/thirst1

I think any artist needs heart, Maturity enough to know that NOT everyone is gonna feel your music, Drive and charisma, cuz people will test you and you gotta realize how many are competing for what you are.. If you dont either have a voice, or bring something unique to the table you have better odds winning the lottery. I myself have not been serious till now, but this being my first release Ive already gotten a shit load of emails to work with producers and other artists, its cool being able to pick n choose.. You just gotta keep goin and show them why you deserve it.. I know it seems like some musical artists came out the blue IE 50 cent n G unit but that dudes been rappin for a long ass time man...

You need what any other artist needs....

... customers.

The question is how to get to 'em. Unless your manager is a marketing genius, I don't know if I would recommed that route.

I engineer rappers on occasion. The number one thing that kills them is lack of musical ability (playing an instrument of some type), lack of knowledge of music theory, inability to learn music technology (software and hardware) and failure to study songwriting techniques.

Focus on that stuff and you'll be miles ahead of the everyday average rapper. To date I haven't met a single rapper that had ALL of that stuff down, but most of the rock musicians I meet have.

I don't think he was criticizing as much as he was offering his opinion and some advice, which is what the original post requested. My advice to you would be to take some english classes at St. Mary and lighten up a little bit, the world owe's you nothing.

You need a dopedealer, some hoes to tag along, and a couple of big dudes to run around and beat up anyone that you talk shit to cuz your so gangsta. And after you have gotten all that consider getting a man-servant Puffy has one. :D

I think most of you people posting here need an English teacher. Do you actually talk like you type? You sound ridiculous. If you want my opinion, you need to get some decent English skills, a lawyer, and some talent, then you need to get some live shows, and a local following to build a buzz. If you get that stuff and you're good the record companies will come to you.

everyone dont no how to play instrument..i know i dont..never played and instrument in my life..but i have a sound in my head and that is what come out in my music..i agree with you most rapper dont know haw to play and instrument..cause they dont have to ..all they have to do is rap over the beat..i dont rap..i just try and make a hot beat..and learn as much as i can..to better my music..

as for what you need @ James.. you really need a fan base..once you get a fan base then you can move on to bigger things..if you have no fans..who is goin to buy your music..and you gotta be pushin units that will have a label like damn..he got something here..at least 50,000 independent..will raise eye brows..just look at how long the Texas rappers..lil flip, slim thug and chamillionaire..has taken to get the shot..and they were pushin 75-90,000 independent...just my 2 cents..

Attitudes like yours are the problem why hip hop is laughed at by real musicians, and not given any respect. It is also the reason it doesn't sound original because of its reliance on sampling other people's work.

Man you have playing the part of the victim down pat.

By doing what you've done you're going to be leagues ahead of other rappers. I wish I worked with rappers that took MUSIC seriously like you do, but sadly you'd be the exception.

I'm just trying to figure out why you feel the need to attack me.
