LMAO!!!

Didn't mean to say the tone sucked when using battery effect... just that it degrades... i guess distortion is degrading the tone too... that's what i like... so uhm... I guess EJ can keep playing battery , i will try to see it "through my fingers"...

hehehe

Guhlenn ;)

Effects degrade soundquality? hmmm... Some do. Some add to the sound. It's just what you're after.

One of my favourite players from tone point of view is david gilmour. Check out his gearlist... Tons of pedals...
He's in another league though... Not many of us that can afford custom leslies. Not many of us that need those either.

And all thru Hiwatt. Same as our guitarplayers uses. In combination with a VERY old orange (first series ever made), and sometimes a nice fender too. Believe me... It hurts. Too many amps. Aouch. Good tone though.

Pedals he uses are: AB switch (thank god), Vox fuzz, Big muff, EH memory man deluxe and a Jim dunlop wah... He's got a great tone too by the way... The vox fuzz is kinda special kindof 'bad' sounding distortion in a good way, we use it as a sortof effect on licks.

I prefer the sound of a compressor, if I had to have one effect only it would be my boss compressor which is one of the early ones.
Currently go boss compressor to boss digital delay (prefer analog) to boss tremolo to boss graphic equaliser to homemade splitter box to amp.

the hard bypass is a crucial thing if you are a tone freak, playing through some nice fat power tubes.if you got an ampeg v4 or a mesa,or even a nice old bassman, there is no need for distortion(depending on what kind you need)but a power soaker,is nice, because a tube amp turned all the way up is sooooooooooo sweet, but can be very loud on an ampeg v4.thus i digress, i am rambling.i think it is important to what song you are playing and what the effect calls for,i prefer playing through a nice old class a tube amp with a short cable,if there is any use for effect i use the tremelo channel or the reverb, but,in another band, it might be a different story.effects can be nice for specific songs, but i have known players, more than often that have a million stomp boxes and all this stuff and can't get a tone to save their life,it all turns to mush, and if they were originally any good, you sure as hell couldn't tell after all the effects hiding the playing.
