Nirvana, Nevermind, is another one that is great for comparing
rock music too.... And I bet those grunge kids, who listen to that stuff, would die if they knew that the drums are all triggered samples...Butch Vig definately has a knack!

I have recently been admiring the production/mixing of Placebo's latest CD, Black Market Music. Their singer's vocals and their screaming P90's would seem to be competing for the same sonic space but they are always separate and distinct without sounding terribly EQ'd. It was mixed by Paul Corkett, who's past credits include The Cure and Tori Amos.

Interestingly enough , Kurt Cobain was the first person to say he hated the sound of Nevermind. In fact, he described it as "too slick."

When I first got into recording, I thought I really dug Butch Vig. Over time I realized that i just dug the bands he was working with. I think Nevermind and Sonic Youth's Dirty are among his best. But it seems to me the greatest amount of his early 90's work is really brittle.

Yeah, the band was pissed, when they heard the finished version. everything was olished up, and drums were redone, with samples....
I think it's a great album though... I think the changes were for the better.....Joe

One disc that can fit a few of your categories was the Foo Fighters "The Shape and the Colour". It does sound like a "modern" album, only with much more warmth and less of that squashed Limp Bizkit sound. It is also a fantastic album if you are looking for arraignment ideas with hard rock. Listen through cans, and you can hear tons of little nuances and small extra parts that can really get you thinking outside of the drums/bass/guitar/vocal take of recording your songs.

about the nirvana thing

smells like teen spirit was ment to be rape me but the engineer put in an overdrive into the insert of curts guitar track and chaged it into a hard rock tune. and that changed the world, i saw this on VH1 so it has a good chance of being true.

to throw on another disk try Cars greatist hits the cars really did it all. and they always sounded great (except Ric Ocasics vocals) but i always thought Meatloaf would have been great in van halen try to visulize that:D

Lots of good info here!!!!!!!

Wow, you guys have it all mapped out pretty well!!! I also like Bob Rock's work, what he has done with The Mighty METALLICA is pretty damn good, really brought out a lot of their power, even if they aint playing 190 bpm!!!!! I think "Mule Variations" by Tom Waits has an awesome sound, also Johnny Cash's "Cash" album produced by Rick Rubin. "Good" by Morphine is also a true gem, very well done.... "Diabolus In Musica" by Slayer is a great reference album..... "The Mind is a Terrible Thing to Taste" by Ministry is a great sounding CD...... also "Psalm 69"...... not to mention "Twitch"...... "White Pony" by The Deftones is great, and so is "Whitey Ford Sings the Blues" by Everlast....Uuhhh, "Master of Puppets" by Metallica is a goodie........Depeche Mode's stuff is good too!!! Wow, so many awesome albums, so little web-space, LMAO!!!! Oh, well, good luck on all your endeavors!!!!

DREAM THEATER!

Really, THAT are mixes!

And ska? Pietasters. Great!

Dark side of the moon; not so hard to mix all to electronic stuff, is it?

this is the second thread ive seen you trash floyd

If i lived somwhere that had a hash bar on every corner , I wouldnt listen to anything else dude.

sigh

again
don't get me wrong.
I've got more albums of them, and most songs are great, not only the producing but also the songs.
But you have to stay honest, even if you are a 'fan', about some songs that are just crap. Another Brick In The Wall sucks. The great gig in the sky and Time rules. You can't say everything is good because it's this or that famous artist. Listen good, and set an opinion. Else it would be so easy for people like Marilyn Manson (who HAS great songs) to make millions out of albums with just some...some...keyboardtunes.

hash bar

Okay
I invite you here in holland, with hashbars on every corner, and we're going to listen to floyd, ok?

I might hold you to that. Just don't tell my wife where I am or she will ruin the party for everyone.

A lot of great albums listed and I agree with most of them. One of my favorite sounding albums is The Cult's "Electric". I just love the consistency of this album...everything sounds great.

I also like The Rembrandt's "LP". That disc sounds great.

And last but certainly not least I love the sound of Jeff Buckley's "Grace".

I'm sure I'll come up with about ten more that I reach for as soon as I press the "Submit" button. What's interesting is that I don't consider my music very similiar to any of this stuff. But these albums sound awesome.

Electric, rocks!...... Very AC/DCish..... Nice edgey, dry sound.

When Ian Astbury was asked what he regrets most about the cult..... and he said..."I regret doing a cover of Born to be wild, I mean that was a really lame spot for us"........

I thinks it's decent actually, I like there version...

Well, I'd say that regarding heavy metal, I like those Metallica mixes since the Black album. Also, Manowar's Triumph of Steel is pretty powerful, especially the drum sounds. I like especially the track Master of the Wind. It has nice dynamics and atmosphere. Also AC/DC's newer mixes come out pretty good, although they use pretty little distortion. Still, the sound is so powerful.

For other music types, I'd say I like Pink Floyd's The Wall and The Final Cut for their mixing quality. Momentary Lapse of Reason is pretty good too. Also the early Genesis album 'Selling England by the Pound' has really nice sound overall. Far better than the previous ones, and even better than the next album. Go figure.

Any XTC, wonderful placement of textures...The Cult ,Really good reference of elec. guit sounds.. great rock stuff..And I like listening to old swing stuff{ Frank Sinatra's Capitol recordings ect.} to get the motor going...Rhythem and horn sections just kill!
