need quick responses from experienced engineers only please..

"Experienced Engineer" is a title that does not and may never apply to me, but I think you'd be hard pressed to find active monitors for $300/pair, let alone anything good. $300/channel gives you some interesting options, though.

I got my Alesis M1 actives for 300 bucks, but they're a little bass heavy and I'm not experienced or an engineer.

Christopher

when you say "bass heavy" do you mean the music sounds flat or thick? because they are suppose to sound that way..or do you mean it is thumpy? good monitors are suppose to accurately depict what the music actually sounds like...if your music sounds bass heavy through the monitors..good chance that the music actually is too bass heavy and it isn't the monitors themselves..to figure this out...play a good reference cd through your monitors...i think that Radiohead's Ok Computer is a great reference cd...and compare how your reference cd sounds in the monitors and in home speakers and use your findings to determine whether your monitors are the problem or your music...
back the issue...

someone with real knowledge throw some good/accurate monitors at me in the 2-300$ range

right now i am looking at the

Tannoy ProtoJ
Tannoy Reveal
Alesis Monitor One
Behringer B2031

thanks a lot

Em, I know what monitors are for. I believe it was you that just posted a thread asking what they were for.

I meant they're a little bass heavy.

Reference to what?

Pretentious "art rock" for pseudo-intellectuals?

why respond when you are just going to make pointless comments? you have nothing better to do with your time?

I think the point of my comment was quite clear.

If you can understand/appreciate Radiohead then surely you can decode the meaning of my stunning art-rock tour de force posts.

I like your stand-offish attitude. That's why I'm posting. I think it's cute.

Christopher

i could do this thing that you guys want to do, but i really juat want monitor advice...i'm too tired and much too bored to play games right now...

i think Readiohead's Ok Computer is a great reference cd, pretentious or not, the recording, mixing and mastering job was perfectly executed...

so, please, let this post serve its original purpose, which is....what are the best near-field active monitors in the 2-300$ range?

Well if you're serious about knowing, there are around five billion threads about this. Search and wade through pages and pages of suggestions.

Christopher

post this on RAP if you aren't going to listen to anyone who isn't an experienced engineer.

Hmmm.... you're NOT going to find ANY good actives for $200-300.... the ones you mentioned - Proto-J, Reveals are passive in that price range. And the Proto-J doesn't come in an active version anyways.

There... an experienced engineer now told you what everybody else already has -- do you believe it any more than you did before???

Bruce

IMO... those Behringers wouldn't be worth the money if they were half the price!

But, YMMV..........

yeah and not one of them gives a single god damn relative answer...

seriously, people on this forum have a hard time with reading comprehension...

I've asked before about active monitors, and all the replies I got were to the effect of "oh try this and this passive monitor out..." I have seen this many times and my response to all these people is, "Thats not what the fucking questioned asked... Jesus fucking christ, learn how to fucking read english."

jesus I am getting tired of people posting replies that have nothing to do with the original question asked.

samich,

I don't know of any... but I am looking at the M-Audio ones and the Edirol MA-10D digital monitors. some will say you may not get very good sound from these and can do much better and I say, "I'm not a fucking professional... I am a hobbyist recorder trying to learn... I don't have much money and work with what I fucking have, so take your rich ass outta my face."

He asked for "experienced" opinions... what do you think pros are going to tell him? Get some kick-ass Radio Shack "speakers"????

If you asked the same question of me, my answer wouldn't change... For $300, t'ain't NO SUCH THING as "best" active monitors... there isn't even mediocre!

Man, talk about 2 people needing a "dope-slap" right in the back of da head!!!

*sheesh*

;)

Get a pair of Auratones and some old mono tube McIntosh pwr amps at some rural "estate sale" where the sellers don't know what they have. This would be a good complimentory setup to the pair of *real* speakers you'll need to get in the future.
(spoken like a pro)

http://www.midiman.net/products/m-audio/studiophile.php

you can get these for $278/pair....active....never heard them but id guess they are ass good as anything active you could get for $300......

id change my mind if i were you and get passives plus an amp..you can get more for your money....you can get a pair of Proto J's and a small Samson Servo amp for well under $350......
