Update on first impressions:
Just had confirmation that there is a "slight rise" in response around the 400 to 800Hz region, which confirms my son Alex's comments. He noted that turning the speakers on their sides, with the tweeters placed inside, helps even it out a little. The active models have been smoothed out at 800Hz, but the slight rise below that is still there on the active models. It's not a big deal, in either case.
I also received confirmation that the crossover is indeed very transparent and remains so in the active models. All in all, I think they have a winner with both models.
