Update on first impressions:

Just had confirmation that there is a "slight rise" in response around the 400 to 800Hz region, which confirms my son Alex's comments. He noted that turning the speakers on their sides, with the tweeters placed inside, helps even it out a little. The active models have been smoothed out at 800Hz, but the slight rise below that is still there on the active models. It's not a big deal, in either case.

I also received confirmation that the crossover is indeed very transparent and remains so in the active models. All in all, I think they have a winner with both models.

Harvey, does placing the monitors on their sides like that affect the stereo imaging much? i thought id heard if you were to place them on the side to put the tweeters on the outside?

thanks

EDIT: also, i was curious if using these monitors to listen to music on a normal basis would be bad for them? or if it would 'wear them out'...? Sorry its probably a stupid question but I just spent a lot of money (to me) on these babies! Keep in mind that I'm listening to music CONSTANTLY... everyday... before i go to school... when i get back from school.... before i go to work.... when i get home from work...

I have a Klipsch ProMedia 2.1 system that (once repaired) will be pretty good for listening to music but its just easy to run everything through my aardvark q10 and wharfies.

thanks again

It depends; in this case, putting them on the inside reduces the apparent low mid peak, and still provides great imaging. In our studios, we usually run all 3 sets of nearfields with the tweeters on the inside.

If you don't run them at high levels, it shouldn't be a problem. It won't wear them out, but it will create changes like a lower resonant point in the woofer, etc.

harvey what is your overall impression of the speakers. have you compared them with the Alesis MKII? how do they compare with other low-budget monitors?

Thanks for the info Harvey... its great to have experienced and knowledgeable people here help us losers out. ;)

Wish I could help out more. I went to listen to them some more yesterday, and they're gone; my son grabbed 'em and they're now in his mixing room, about 25 miles away. If I'm lucky, I'll eventually get them back.

wharfedale active?

Deepwater,

I've had a pair of tannoys (model 6 something) for ever and ever, and finally blew a woofer. Now I've been thinking about the tannoy reveal passives, but like the idea of an active speaker and the tannoy active are more than I wanted to spend, hence my interest in the Wharfedale DP8.2A Diamond Pro Active Monitors you've been talking about here.

I run on a Mac system, with the MOTU 828 interface, which has xlr and 1/4 outs. Would I run the wharfedale actives out of the 828? And if I wanted to use them with my power amp (and old denon w/rca outs) would that be possible as well?

And could you let me know what your price would be, and how much for shipping to zip code 90291?

I was going to send the request for a quote in an email, but I'm new to the board and couldn't figure out how to find your emaill adress.

thanks!

I'd just like to add, for no good reason, that it is amazing that this thread has gone on for so long, and that to this day, is somehow still becoming more worthwhile and educational.

This is a good place on the internet. One of a select few IMO. :)

Yes you can use the line outputs from your AMP and Motu. The 8.2A has all three - XLR, RCA, 1/4" so your set for what ever.

Sorry to keep the questions going but how do the 8.1's compare to the 8.2's.
Are they as good for mixing?

You just lose some low end. The 8.2A with the 6.5" is really the way to go. They offer a go balance between a 5”, which can be too small, and an 8”, which can be too big. If your budget only allows for a 5" than the 8.1A is still a great monitor for that budget when compared to other 5”ers. Both are very transparent and translate very well.

Thanks Deepwater, I will get in touch with you soon as I have now been sucked into the Wharfedales. I will most likely go with the 8.2A. I don't want to find myself down the road wishing I had gone with the larger of the two.

Thanks again
Ed

dumb question here... is there any reason not to leave the xlr's plugged in at the same time as the rca ins? so i could quickly a/b two different sound sources? what would happen if the monitors recieved audio from both sources at once?

Ok, so I just got to play with my 8.2 A's today. I love em!!! Another satisfied customer here thanks to David. Everyone should check out deepwater. These speakers are incredible. My friend and I were listening to some of our favorite CDs this afternoon and we heard things we never knew were there before. Like some subtle acoustic guitar on certain tracks and little things in the background. It was great!!! The blue lights look super cool, but I guess they are kinda bright. I think I'm going to scotch tape a piece of tracing paper over them so they are still there, but not as brigth. ok, peace!

If I'm liking my Yamaha msp5 monitors, but the low-end is just a little too weak for me, would it be worth my time to sell them and replace them with these wharfedale 8.2a's?

thanks!

The same thing happened to me today! :D

I don't know... if you like your msp5's maybe you should consider adding a sub? but then again I don't know because I've never heard them, but I really like my wharfedale's.... Some have said that they could use some more bass so I know a few people have added subs. So if you do get the wharfs instead of your msp5's then you might be in the same situation with not enough bass.

true. although, i'd imagine 6.5" makes quite a difference from 5". i think i may give them a try.

deepwater, do you offer some kind of return policy?

Were those things supposed to be there?
