Before you do anything... walk inside, stand in the center, take a deep breath, and "twirl" in a 360 very slowly. Look at the stained glass. Look at the hardwood pews. Look at the moulding, trim, and architecture. There are going to be some materials in there you just cannot get anymore. If you can re-use it, consider doing so.

Well, one of the great things about this property is the fact that because it was built by the military, they used simple pine for all of the woodwork. Yes, most of it is knotty pine (pricey these days) but regular ol' pine can be used to build all of my fixtures (mix desk, racks etc.). Just have to run it through a planer to smooth up the surfaces, stain it as closely as possible, spray poly on it and I'll have a pretty close match for a lot less dough than hardwoods would cost.

Agree?

Now, here is where I may differ with some of the recommendations: I would put all the interior furnishings, pews, altar, etc. into storage and do everything with gobos, freestanding booths, etc. so that if need be the entire thing can be put back as a perfect little church. Why? Movie and TV shoots. A perfect country church like that, with a soundproof control booth built in. would be golden to location scouts. One big week or two of production and you could have that building PAID.
This is a great idea!!!!

Glad you like it. While I'm a borderline athiest, I have a "thing" for old churches, stained glass, and hardwoods.

I didn't realize your new place was mostly pine, but I think it add tremendous "feel" to the place if you recycle as much of the wood as you can.

It also gives you something additional to talk about when you give tours to potential clients. "Feel" I believe to be important in larger recording studios.

Plus, in a practical sense, it lowers your materials cost if you recycle :D

Same here.

For something I need to make, I need more square steel tubing, and with my not working at the moment combined with ridiculous steel prices, I've been putting the project off for a while.

The day after Xmas I was driving to a 'quik chek' to get my usual morning coffee and newspaper, when I spied in front of someone's house a rust-free weight bench, made of square tubing. Yep, into the back of the truck it went. Then for giggles, I did laps up and down through the town the quik chek is in and managed to find people curbed tons of exercise equipment, mostly made with square steel tubing.

My wife gave me a dirty look when I arrived home and she saw my pickup bed overflowing with crap, but that's okay. Have enough steel now to last me through the winter.

And, got myself an electric treadmill that actually works! I dismantled it and painted the frame last night, and reassembled it this morning.

Free overcomes many faults. Though my wife didn't like the school bus color I painted the treadmill frame. Hey, the paint was free too :D

My snowblower, lawnmower, tiller and gas leaf blower were curb snatches. Each required about 1/2 day of effort and maybe $10 worth of parts each to get working properly. My riding mower was free too, a friend of mine gave it over two summers ago. It needed two belts, big woop.

The massive 500cid stroker I'm building for my pickup was also nearly free. Got the block from a running engine I bought for $300 and sold everything attached to it for about the same $300, the heads were free, the intake I had lying around... the pistons from who knows what and turned down on the lathe, the rods were from an old buick big block that's long gone, and so on. So for the cost of gaskets, some bolts that I've lost, bearings, and a cam, it's a minimal cost type of build. Easily 400 manhours of labor on my part, but that's essentially "free" other than it pulling me away from "real life" and such, hence why it's taking so darn long to finish it.

A fair amount of my wrenches, sockets and so on are tools I've found on the ground, or in cars at the junkyard from other people leaving them behind. Obviously if I see someone leaving their tools I'll say something to them, but if no one's around it's abandoned. Makes up for all the tools I've left behind over the years.

Happy new year!

Not quite :D My wie says I'm the biggest cheapskate there ever was. With a grin though. :p But frederic, YOU are my kinda guy! And btw, I too collect steel exercise stuff. Man, the thrift stores and yard sales are FILLED with this stuff CHEAP. Some of the places I ALWAYS check the dumbsters for, are the local music stores and Radio Shack. Got some cool stuff from them. One cool thing was a bright red CURVED all aluminum extrusion ZILDIAN cymbal display. Very cool extrusions. I'm using it for my rackmount stand. I just got this sheet metal floor display for guitar effects. Even has a power supply for the effects built in. Amazing what people throw away. Trouble is, how much room do you have? :p With my wifes ebay inventory HABIT( ;) ) my place is packed to the brim now. Fuck. Can barely move in my shop. Especially with winter rains happening. Usually I can move stuff outside. But not now. Damn. Cold too, even though I have one of those "jet engine" kerosine heaters. Costs $15 in kerosine every 2 days if I run it. I'm laid off at the moment so no money for fuel. But I get dressed real warm and my little "side shop" where the workbench is has a door at each end. That way I can use a little electric heater and it stays real comfortable. Even the workbench is a total disaster right now from building my computor iso cab and my.....ahem..."sculpture". All the stuff I'm using on the sculpture is laid out on the workbench like a "palette." But its so much fun building something that don't have to do a damn thing but please my "aesthetics", I can't stop building it. Ha! I'm using all the old hardware and junk that I've collected for years. I'll post a pic of it when I finish. Its for the studio. I posted a pic of it on the Cave forum a couple of weeks ago and C7sus said..."that redefines the word HIDEOUS" :D Oh well, to each his own. To me, I love the look. Later frederic.

Yeah where I live I could of bought a high school for a buck (because it was closed down) This bulding was massive, also the gym had the super high wooden roof. The acoustics were amazing.

Why didn't you?

It would of cost me to much to keep the buliding going, would of ended up putting myself in the hole.
Couldn't you have bought it and sold it to builders for the land? Or would that not have made any money? It would here in Scotland, i think.

The plot of land for this are is not that big and since it is a rural place there is lots of land to be bought. If i had evern say 10, 000 to invest in it I would make money because the gym is a perfect concert venue and the other classrooms and the second gym could be used for recording or small practice studios. I have money later it may be my own business.

Be creative.

Wall closed the gym and build a big recording studio.

Then make all the classrooms "shops", and rent them out and call the high school a "strip mall".

Capitalism my friend, capitalism!

Yea, but you gotta have the "capitol" first to make capitollism work. Like they say, "it takes capitol to make capitol" :D

You also have to remember that this is an older buliding and I would have to make it all age user friendly.

it does sound really cool here!

i like the thought of recording in a church myself...

i am going to be looking for a repo building in a while and i have lots of leads.... i also know of a church but its not near that cool looking :(

i am also a nasty little trash picker, have been known to swipe all kinds of stuff... i got a guitar once that i played for a long time and then striped it for parts later...

right now i know of a church that wants to get rid of a Hammond B something model (the sound guy is not very smart) its got one of them speakers that warbles too!

i think i can get it for $50!

i missed the Grand Piano :(

oh well i am digging around for stuff to make my new tracking room work out better for me, seems that i found a warehouse that wants to tear down all the sound proofing treatments! nice stuff too! should be clean enough to work on my walls :D

i built my first Gobo out of trash, its working great for me too!

If it's a Hammond B3 with a leslie....

GRAB IT!!!

They sound AWESOME!!!

thats awesome pdlstl, congrats, should be pretty sweet.

Thanks for all the great comments and thoughts!

First let me say, I know we have members here who cover the entire spectrum as related to Christianity and God. I fully respect the choices and opinions of everyone here on this forum. While we all, most likely, wouldn't/couldn't agree on that subject, we ALL share a love for the artform called recording.

Having said that, this especially sweet for me because I'll be practicing what I love in a very special structure.

I'm very excited about this as having a place like this has been a dream of mine for years.

Again, thanks to all and standby for a multitude of questions! :D
