My room is 10'x14' - the ceilings are about 5.5' high in the corners that rise to a peak of just over 7'.

It's a tuffshed, double sheetrocked and insulated.

I thought we'd really kick it up a notch and put 3" foam on the celing and a reflective floor. There's foam in checkerboard on the walls and 2'x4'x4" corner traps in place. (SAFB covered in fabric) I had another four 2" panels where the walls meet the celings and in the peaked corners of the roof. I wound up taking them down, as they were just adding to the HF absorption, imo.

Low frequency runs absolutely rampant in the room. It sounded better before we did anything to it.

Before I throw a bunch more money at it, I want a reality check. I've got five 2" panels that I'm not using - I need big LF absorption.

Would superchunk traps in the four corners help significantly?

I can't really put the desk in any centered location because the drums take up such a great portion of the room. I've also got amps and keyboards in that bugger. Can I still hope to create a decent mixing position?

Heck yes it would work. We just got back from the lab testing a product that is very similar and was damn happy with what come back.

For the ceiling I would straddle the upper corner (peak) with 4" panels. You could then hang some 2" panels on the other portion of the ceiling.

I'm worried that there's too much HF absorbtion and that adding more traps, while performing in the LF, will also add MORE HF absorbtion which could make the room even worse...

Also, I can't hang 4" panels over the peak in the roof because it will make the celing too low for OH mic placement. That's why I went with the foam.

Diffusion seems to be more difficult to achieve... I can't come out more than 4" from the walls or I lose too much real estate. How about painting the foam?

The foam completely covers the surface of the ceiling. the checkerboard foam is on the walls - which if I get the superchunks will probably be replaced with alternating 2" and 4" 2x4 SAFB panels.



Would covering the superchunks in a tighter weave fabric keep the LF absorbtion but reflect some HF?

I thought Ethan said foam on the ceiling with a reflective floor is an acceptable way to proceed? :confused:
 
the foam on the ceiling isnt absorbing any bass, so you still have two surfaces bouncing LF between each other

Well, it sounds worse than it did when I had even thinner foam on it than the shit I have on there now - and the ceiling is peaked. Wouldn't that make a difference? Would more traps or thicker ones in the main four vertical corners help that? Or do I have to treat every surface?

You have too much absorption. You never wanna cover more than 1/3 of a surface.
 
I don't know what your traps are made of but it's been advised here in the past to wrap the 703 with thin plastic to reflect some highs while still absorbing lows. Are your traps built this way? Just a thought.
 
Ordered 36 panels of 2x4x2" John Mansville 3pcf mineral wool for superchunks today. I'll be covering these in burlap. Hopefully this will clean up the LF a bit in our tiny studio.

All foam is off the walls, I'll be placing the 2" panels and the 4" panels to cut first reflections. When we have an album worth of material rehearsed I'll invest in some 703 for the ceiling peak and the wall/ceiling corners.
