Alan Hyatt,

Aside from the fact I think those Studio Project mics are butt ugly :), I'm thinkin of pickin one up... Unfortunatly, the local music shop doesnt seem to have them

Do you have a reccommended or authorized dealer in the Toronto, Ontario, Canada and/or surrounding area? And what street price range in Canadian dollars should I be expecting?

I prefer not to shop on the web mind you...

Wildfire,

How dare you call my butt ugly....:D

Long & McQuade, Steves Music are all dealers, and I am sure there is lot's more, I just don't know the names, but call our distributor, and they can help you.

Power Music at 905-405-1229

those guys at Steves are usually rude, so I tend to avoid that place. Long and McQuades is where I usually go... but I went there, they didn't have one... Actually, I don't think the sales person has even heard of Studio Projects. Then of course, he starts pushing whatever he has in stock.. common pratice I guess, but sure annoyoing as hell. It never gets me anywhere.

... btw allan, you never gave me a rough idea in Canadian Dollars I should be lookin at.

Wildfire,

You know I am not sure. That is why I gave you Power's number. I really don't look at what the distributors charge, because you know they have to pay freight, duty, and taxes, so it is a little different, but I think it works out the same...just convert it to Canadian.

Bruce... Do a fellow Canuck a favour...

Record 30 seconds of acoustic with the C1.... and post the MP3 somehwere.... Then do the same with an sm57 and with the 4033...

I know these mikes aren't really comparable, But I think it would be a very interesting and worthwile "test"...

Thanks....

PS.. Don't move the chair or mike stand between takes, and same guitar and same player.... I know thats alot to ask for, but when I buy my new microwave, I will A/B some lasagna's for you, and let you know which is tastiest....and return the favour.. :)

Voxvendor,

That is not a great test. MP3's take away from the audio, and the mic that loads best to the mic pre used, could sound better. Now, if he uses several mic pres, then you get an average to base from.

Why don't you call Power Music, our distributor. Maybe one of his sales guys has a C1 that you can hook with for a couple of hours and record something. Call 905-405-1229, ask for Ron, and see if he can help.

Alan Hyatt

I know the quality is not optimal with MP3's... But for the purpose of A/B testing it works, cause they are all degraded the same amount and all compete acordingly....

Is that a Toronto number?.... I will have to check that out..

Thanks Alan

Its an Ontario number, but he has salesguys all over.

Alan

Im just outside T.O. and im in the same area code.. so That might be handy.....

I WILL zip up short WAVs... like I did with the mic-shootout clips a year or so ago...

Is it a subjective test, absolutely! Scientific - no! But I will run the different mics thru the exact same signal chain with the exact same source to illustrate the MIC differences....

Alan's right in that you'd normally vary your pre to match the mic appropriately, but for many in a home-environment - they don't have that option anyways!

I don't intend it as a contest - only as demonstrative differentiation.

Yeah exactly... This is just a good test for the regular home user...

Thanks Bruce

Dammit Bruce, you need to find a Marshall MXLv67 to throw into this test......

Voxvendor...

Power Music is a Missisauga based company, (as I find most distributors are for some reason)

Thats not to far from you at all... :)

Oh, and I got some numbers from long and mcquade for what a C1 and C3 retails in the T.O. area...

C1 - $385 CAN
C3 - $675 CAN

Sound reasonable?

Im looking forward to hearing the C1 in Bruces Test... My AT 4033 was only $475....

If the C1 is good it's then my choice will be debatable.. but if it's shit, then I would most likely save up the extra $90 and get another 4033...

I mean, im already geared for spending $400 on a mic.... whats another $75 :) and I know the 4033 rocks.. (well to my ears it does )

But as I say, If im blown away by the C1, and it's sound is decent enough, who wouldn't want to save $90.....

Thanks for the Tips wildfire.... Good to chat with some of the Neighborhood folk :)

vox,
seems like your decision should include some other factors. like what do you want to do?

another 4033 would give you a nice pair of mics, if you're lucky they'll be close enough to do some good stereo micing.

getting a C1 (or any other good mic ...V67G?...) instead would give you another "arrow in your mic quiver" to pull out in place of the 4033...

Hey doesn't everyone know that the G in V67G stands for GIDGE!

We'll just have to wait and see how good the C1 is.... Matched or not matched... I would love to have another 4033 to pair with my existing one....

Slightly off is better than a matched pair.... in my books..... It's also nice to have 2 different brands of mikes to pair...Like a C1 and a 4033.... but 2- 4033's even if slightly different (not a matched pair), will give a slightly different sound, yet have the same "essence"...

I like that.

But Options are all out right now.. Im just gonna wait and hear what happens here.
