Lizard People
I'm looking for a special kind of feedback; it sounds to me like birds. One can hear it prominently in Prince's song Computer Blue (and also in the intro to Darling Nikki):

I know it's a guitar because once my own guitar made that noise. I have never been able to recreate it.

Any ideas?

If it's the sound in the intro, try using a slide on the strings somewhere near the pickups, beyond the fretboard. Sounds something like that to me, with some effects on it or maybe it's sampled and triggered because the attack on some of the notes is really quick.

Thanks, Tadpui. I'm certain it's not a slide. I think it has something to do with phase or chorus effect. Pretty cool noise, though.

Anyone else?

If it's the sound I think you're referring to, it's feedback through a flanger with high speed and regen settings.

Can you reproduce it?

Not with my MIDI guitar. I used to get it with a DOD stereo flanger and combo amp all the time though. Some reverb or delay may be needed to kick it off, not sure. Every time I've heard it, there was reverb or delay present. It was on the The Cure in Orange video, where a lot of delay was used.

I don't have a flanger. I need a couple minutes worth of this feedback for a song. I can't pay, but I can provide motivational slogans in any thread you wish.

I can try to come up with something on a synth. I don't have a regular electric guitar and amp to provide the feedback, that's the problem.

Okay, I have a General MIDI synth running into a DOD analog delay, which runs into a DOD FX747 flanger. One side of the flanger is going into a TS-9 and the other into a DOD Juice Box. I can't get the guitar feedback sound from any of the plucked instrument patches, but some of the pads are interesting. Is there a specific instrument you want to try?

That bird sound is pretty easy to get.Just crank your amp and use the smooth edge of a pic to rake and lightly hammer the unwound strings over the pickups, while rolling the guitars volume control up and down with your free hand.EVH used that technique alot.

I don't, really. I'd love to hear something you came up with though.

Yes! That's very close. Can you get it in little bursts, or to reverse direction?

I could throw some deep tremolo on it to get the bursts, maybe.

Here's my favorite example of flanger + feedback. You can hear it all the way through the intro. I approximated this tone with an Alvarez Scoop, whiteface Crate 2x10, and DOD flanger.
