NM - Land of Excrement
Ok, just received my Audiophile SP-5B's and they sound great. Trouble is, they are so freakin' loud it's scary. I have the Windows volume control on the lowest setting, the speakers turned almost down to off and they are still way too loud. I'm running Win2K, Delta 1010, with the speakers assigned to the 1/2 channel outputs of the 1010. By the way, I don't get any output at all while playing a CD through my CD-ROM drive but do get that high volume when playing back Cakewalk files and while playing back through Creative Play Center. How do I properly adjust things so I don't blow these things up????!!!

would certainly appreciate your help,

rpe

Can you get into the Delta 1010 Software interface?

If you can, go to the mixer section inside of it (I have a desktop shortcut to mine) and turn down the outputs there. You can also try changing the patchbay routing to a more ideal config for your setup.

My setup uses a mixer between the Delta and my SP-5B's, and I have everything set so that unity gain is a fairly loud listening level. I am using outs 1-8 of the 1010 into ins 1-8 of the mixer and assigning thru Cakewalk, the tracks I want to each mixer channel.

I would assume you are routing Cakewalk with everything going out Delta 1010 1/2, then straight out to the monitors?

Sounds like we have almost the same setup, minus the mixer for you.

And if you want to play your CD thru the Delta's converters, you will have to change that in Multimedia setup in the Control panel, so that windows uses Delta as the default sound card..:)

maestro_dmc !!!!!!!!!!!!!

You are a fine fellow. Thanks for the great info. I'll try your ideas tonight when I get home from work.

many thanks,

Sounds like a defect in the speakers volume control, you should be able to turn them down to silence before they shut off.

No, I don't think so. I have the same equipment as he does, and would expect the same problem if I set it up the same way.

Besides, do you think that two speakers that are boxed separately would have an identical defect?

BTW rpe, the setup I use allows me to have the volume on the back of the speakers set to about halfway or a little lower.

You might want to consider getting yourself a mixer, so you can make fuller use of the 1010's capabilities!

Another thought!

rpe, since the Delta 1010 has balanced outs, and the SP-5B's have balanced in's, are you using balanced (TRS) cables to connect them? This probably wouldn't affect the volume level much, but it could maximize the dynamic range of your monitoring system.

A balanced connection should give you much better signal to noise than standard line cables in this instance. I don't remember if the 1/4" jack on the sp-5b's is balanced, or not, but I know the XLR jack is. Worst case you could get an adapter wire for each monitor to make the connections.

That is if you don't get yourself a mixer instead!

OK enough Mumbo Jumbo , I gotta go!

I'm in the process of trying these things now. Thanks again for your advice. I do have a mixer so I'll try that method too.

:D Just recieved my SP-5B's today and yes, they are LOUD!

The 1/4" TRS connector on the back can be used Balanced or Unbalanced. Should work well with the Balanced outs on the 1010.

OK, got everything hooked up going through my mixer. Cakewalk files sound awesome but still nothing from my cd drive. I'm sure it's some little setting somewhere that just needs the proper selection but I can't find it.

thanks again for all your help,
