I just need to know if this is the way recordings can be done.

1. I record track "A" with guitar and vocals with the drums play on another track.

2. I record the guitar by itself for track "B"

3. I record the vocals by itself for track "C".

4. I delete track "A".

Is this common or am I doing it wrong?

If I'm following you correctly, yes it's common. Track A would be a scratch track.

The only thing I do different is keep the 'scratch vocal' for the musicians
to cue from.

From the people I've recorded with/jammed with; it's pretty much unanimous
that we play with more emphasis and "feel the tune" with vocals playing along.

Counting your parts for the next change up really sucks imo.

I use reason limited for this. I just make a tempo track using a kick and hh. It also helps with setting up the grid in cubase (bpm).

Or ghost track ;)

It's mainly for cue's though and generally 1 guitar and vocal cues for choruses and whatnot. Doen't have to be mindblowing cause it'll just get deleted anyway so doesn't need any effot.

But yeah, that's how a lot of producers do it :)
