I'm doing a cover of this song - is it just me or does it sound as though the kick drum is absent from the first half of the track, barring the low E tremolo part? It seems that the cow bell is taking its place..?
It's a lot more audible during the middle section, during which the cowbell bows out for a while. So either the kick is totally muted or it's just placed further down in the mix and my ears aren't picking it up. What do you think? In the case of the cowbell filling in for it, the bass frequencies of that are probably slightly boosted in the low to compensate..?
