what are the pros and cons of buying a usb sound card instead of one that installs in your pci slot?

I don't have a laptop but I will probably be recording on different computers so that's one reason I was leaning toward usb

been looking at the Audiophile USB

anybody have the Tascam US-122

ahh, I see........you guys have had it up to here with these threads, sorry

i did a search and found a lot of info, thanx

after reading everything I guess the best way to go is firewire, right?

Not necessarily. I've used a couple USB sound devices and a PCI device. Both types have pros and cons. Some have Hi-Z instrument inputs on them so you don't need a direct box or a preamp, some have more inputs than others, some have multiple virtual outputs so multiple software can use the same soundcard at the same time. Some work with certain software better than others. Some have software mixers. Some have hardware mixers. Some are really expensive. Some are a little less costly.

That is not the scope of the discussion here. USB comes dead last when talking about raw bandwidth. If you don't have the bandwidth to record the number of tracks want to at any particular time, all other features are irrelevant.

Well, then I guess I don't understand English. The original post asked what the pros and cons are of USB vs. PCI and turned into Firewire is the best. In fact, nothing about bandwidth was mentioned in anyone's response in this thread until you. Bandwidth is one thing to consider about the pros and cons. You offered one Pro vs. Con. It seems like I hit the bullsye on the scope dartboard and I went into a little depth. Maybe you don't understand English? Or do you just like to hear yourself post a thread?

Yeah, ok buddy... What's with the personal attack?

Actually PCI is still better than Firewire. It costs less and can handle more tracks.

What else would you discuss when talking about pro/cons of different computer interfaces if not their data throughput? Pre-amps and converters for different connections can be bought separately, which in most cases is probably a better solution.
