FIRST OF ALL... PLEASE ANSWER THIS THREAD AS SOON AS YOU CAN BECAUSE I MIGHT MAKE A BIG MISTAKE TOMORROW IF I BUY THE WRONG COMPUTER SO PLEASE ANSWER THIS ONE WITH GOD'S SPEED!!!!!!!!!!!!

Hello All, I am about to buy my first PC for music. I have had two before but I never knew a thing about them. Now I want to buy a Fujitsu/Siemens High Class p-9350-40/128. It costs 2,399 German Marks (I live in Munich by the way) and it has...
PentIII 933 MHz
128 MB RAM
DVD
CD-RW
40 GB Hard Drive
32-bit Grafix Card
16-bit sound
MS Windows ME

Now I plan on outfitting it with a 24 bit Delta 66 sound card and using the Delta Omni I/O for my ins, outs, pre-amps, mixer, audio interface etc... Then use my Roland JV 1010 and Roland "Edirol" PC-300-A Midi master-keyboard-controler, and the MIDI sport 2x2 MIDI interface. And pushing Emagic Audio Logic Platinum software. Enough people have told me that this will be a good starting system. Now the thing is, with this MIDI interface part.... People have told me that the computer must be USB compatable. I know that USB stands for Universal Stereo Bus (I think that is what it stands for anyway). But what I want to know is, is this a standard feature on most computers or do I REALLY have to ask that one. Because I live in Germany and do not speak enough German yet to ask such difficult questions and I am not so sure how knowledgable the guy is at the store to just KNOW what I am talking about. Is this USB rare or pretty much standard? How do I check myself? And if I DO buy this computer and find out that it is not USB compatable, what will I have to do to make it compatable with my Roland JV 100 and my MIDIsport 2x2?

Thanks guys,
Mike

Two USB ports are standard on all Pentium II & III machines I have ever seen.

They look like 2 small rectangular slots on the back of the machine, right next to where the keyboard and mouse plug in.

You can later get a device called a USB Hub that will let you plug in more than 2 devices.

Congrats and good luck on your new system!

Mike, the Usb port is a small slot on the back or
on the front. It doesnt look like any of the
other slots on a computer, it is about the size
of the end of a toenail clipper.
If the computer has the specs you said, its gonna
have a usb port.

My girlfriend works for Fujitsu, so be sure
and buy that one. Chhers David

To be, or not USB . . .

USB is nothing more than a couple of plug-ins on the back of the box, and has become standard on most systems for almost 2 years now, a year and a half anyway. Most systems have 2 USB ports, some 4.

Just ask the salesman if the computer has USB ports or not. If he doesn't know, look on the back of the computer yourself and check for a hole about 1/2 inch square with two rectangular plug-in looking things in it.

If it doesn't have the USB ports, you can always add them on later with add-on cards, but it's easier and cheaper if it is on the system right from the get go.

I can watch TV on my pc with a USB gizmo. Also can hook up digital cameras and scanners and various other fun things.

USB (Univeral Serial Bus) is really handy and most definetly standard on all new PC. If the salesperson doesn't know if the computer has USB ports, shop elsewhere as you cannot trust to get any support from them if something goes wrong...

Check the speed of the hard disc. Make sure that it is 7200rpm and not 5400. You will need the higher transfer rate of the faster disc. As far as I can tell, Fujitsu disc are often 5400rpm (silent model and the AH)

Make sure that it really is a soundcard and not a soundchip built in on the motherboard. Built in audio can cause compatibility problems with "pro" soundcards.

The processor is really an overkill. I would suggest an 800MHz or so and spend the money on more RAM. 256MB RAM is nice.

Win ME is a bit of a risk. Many soundcards (and other HW) don't have drivers yet and I have not heard anyone who think it's actually better than 98.

Good luck

c7sus - U Smoke Bong? That would be more like Universal Cerebral Bus.

I used to know a guy who rode the short cereal bus...
