US DMP-3 plugged into UK socket

Yeah I have "this friend", he's a real dufus with electrical stuff.

Anyway this "friend" of mine, he bought a DMP-3 in the US and plugged it into a UK socket (using an adapter). He tells me it didn't like it- the lights flickered and the unit made a buzzing noise so he shut the power off pretty quick.

Any ideas what I can tell my "friend" as to how much damage he's likely done to his preamp.

That friend of mine, he can be a real dick :rolleyes:

I always wondered if there's any internal differences between the US version of the DMP3 and the UK version. Is there any chance of you (or someone) with the former posting some snapshots of the circuitary and a UK version owner doing likewise? :)
 
Well i spoke to someone at M-Audio tech support and he said it'd be fine as long as I used a UK power supply (£22 direct from M Audio).

This suggests to me that the unit is the same and that the power supply regulates the correct voltage. Having said that you could fit what I know about electrics on a postage stamp.

I've ordered a UK ps anyway and my fingers are crossed.

I don't have a digi camera but it's something I'd be interested to learn about too.

It might be worth mentioning that I opened the unit up and there is no visible evidence of damage (such as "unhappy" looking components :D ), that said I don't know what I'm looking for or if there would necessarily be any physical signs of damage.

So, M-Audio will sell you a power unit for a device of theirs that's been purchased from outside ones home market. That's good to know :)

Because no way in hell am I paying nearly £200 for one from DV when I can get it for £85 from the US.

My thoughts exactly which is why i bought from a US seller.

However those little extras do add up:

Including shipping the unit cost £103
VAT added by customs - £14
Parcel Force 'handling fee'- £13
UK power supply- £22 (delivered)

So that's £152 in total.
Bearing in mind that digital village are selling them now for £185 (delivered) means a total saving of £33. A saving yes but not as big a saving as you first think.

And it might take a couple of weeks to arrive.
 
I got a DMP3 from the US, and I'm in Australia. The transformer supplied wasn't compatible, but I tracked down M-Audio's Australian wholesale distributor. They supplied me with a transformer for the unit.

It works fine for me.
