Hey guys, I have a few questions about hard disk cleanup and unreferenced files.... Each of my projects is taking up an average of about 6gb. I noticed the edits and the images folders takes up the majority of that space for each project and that most if not all of the wavs in those folders are not even used in the project. So my question is... When cleaning up, are the unreferenced files the parts "not on top" in the project or are they just files that belonged to some project I already deleted? I wanted to get a more experienced opinion on this before I start deleting. I could really use the space. I am also wondering, are the images and edits .wav files what the .cpr and .csh files call on to constuct a track or what? I went through my hard drive and deleted the .cpr and .csh files of the projects I didn't want to keep, but it didn't really make any significant amount of free space. Just really curious and a little lost about all this. I'd appreciate it if someone could set me straight on this issue... Thanks a lot.

The "clean up" feature in Cubase allows you to get rid of files that are not being used in your project. It is a wonderful tool.... assuming you have properly set up your file folders and templates. If you have not, you will regret ever using it. Basically, if you have 2 songs or porjects sharing the same audio folder and you use the clean up feature, it will delete all the files except the ones being used in the currently open project. This means you will lose your other project. Also, if you have made a template that included audio files in it, you may accidentally erase those from the project where that template was initially created.

Alright, thanks man... I think that clears it up, so the tracks underneath on the project window are considered unreferenced files.... Well I think I have set everything up properly, but I guess to be on the safe side I'll make a back up of the projects before I start the process... As much as I don't want to go this route... If I decided to just go through and start listening to clips and deleting the ones that I know I'll never use, is that ok also? Thanks again for the info....

Just do a "Save As" into a new folder.

All files actually used in the project will be saved into the new folder. Everything else is what's leftover. Far safer than you trying to guess what's used and what's not.

Then you can delete the old folder.

This is covered in the manual and the help files....

Even with cleanup and save as commands, there will still be some extra files in your project in all likelihood. Things like tracks underneath a punch in. I would seriously reccomend against the "listen to and delete" approach. There is a good chance you will delete a file because what you hear is no good, but later on in that same take may be a part that you are using because it was good. This would be detrimental, but very easy to do. I would just use the remove unused media command or the save as to a new folder option.

then that's the approach i will take to it....thanks a lot for all the help guys....
