I should be embarrassed but I'm not. This song was recorded at university for coursework, I have had very limited studio time and had to play all the parts but the drums for myself, but without any engineering help. That means putting click tracks on long count ins and running between rooms.

I will have 90 mins tops to correct every flaw I can in this song. Some of them I'm aware of - I had the drums on our HD24 and since putting them into the PC I haven't been able to sync them back in time yet.

Also, I'm fully aware that I cannot sing

So I just need a list of things you'd do to the mix, and I'll try to fit as many as possible in in the time I have left, which is next Thursday. I'll put up a final mix then.

Nik, I'm catching hell from my old lady. I will check it out later.....
DUCK!

There seem to be some timing issues, the drummer isn't very tight either..

Drums sound muddy. Kick is burried. Crash and hi-hat are panned to hard left imo.

Bring up the bass.

The drummer was pretty tight, I had the drums, vox and guitars on HD24, but I had to go back and gate the toms and compress the kick. I just haven't quite lined the drums up yet.

There will be one or two other timing issues. That's not the point! This isn't a performance or artistic piece, I have to show some basic capabilities with the equipment - I couldn't care less about bum notes at this point.

First off, I like the vocals. You may not be balls on pitch wise, but you have something more important: Good (likeable) vocal quality (you sorta sound like Kevin Gilbert at times)...which leads me to my first suggestion:
Bring the vocals up more!
Second...Is there Bass guitar in there somewhere? If so: Bring that up as well.
Same for the kick drum.

Otherwise I like the production...and I like the song.

There is definately some kind of timing problem, either with the drums or with the guitar. They are getting off beat, and my belief is that the drums are what is causing it, like the guy said previously. For example, listen to around 0:50. It's like the drummer was getting fancy and caused a few beats to land wrong.

I do also agree that you have a fantastic voice, and in general this sounds like good music.

After a quick listen, I agree that you have a great voice.
IMO, the piano needs to be a bit more subtle. Other than the things that you already know, it sounds good.

Guys, you are just the best. I hate my voice and when I was putting that rough mix together I had it muted out, hence the wrong level. Thank you for your kind words - I had many attempts at that because I have previously sung with my throat closed (like the guy out of Switchfoot) to keep my pitching accurate. It made me sound like Kermit the Frog!!!

The bass guitar will be brought up, and I've sorted my middle-and-side tracks out with the piano, and got rid of the high pitched squeak and dipped the volume. Just need to automate some mutes and sort those damn drums out and then will be laughing.

The drums and vox plus guide acoustic part were all on an external hard disk recorder ... so now I've gated the drums I have to send them to the PC and sync them up. I will re-mix them again though first, put some more kick, strengthen the snare and maybe narrow the overheads.
