under $500 mic pre

NL5, not sure about the Grove Tubes pre timing either.

As you may know, the general consensus among pro AE's is that there's nothing inherently better on solid state vs. tube designs-only HOW they're
designed. IMHO a home recordist is probably best off with a clean mic pre to start off with, based on my limited understanding of this stuff.

RNP will be perfect for what you need it for, but it will not give you a "phat sound" it'll give you accurate with a lil upper mid bump that extends to the high heavens, the low end is very tight not big sounding by any means.

If you are willing to take a risk on used gear an old Nagra 4.2 with universal pre's may me something to consider, they are quite nice as a preamp.
