So I found a u87 at a music store here in atlanta. They are asking $1500 bucks for it. It comes with no shock mount, and they have a 3 month return policy. Should I get it? I know they are good mics, but how do I know someone hasnt dropped it or something? I dont have a new one to compare it to. What should I do.

And yes, it is an official neuman, it has the box, and all origional paperwork.

I am about 500 shy, I will have to wait a few weeks. Is it a good investment? How versatile is it? How much is a shockmount? Sorry for so many questions, just wondering.

thats a nice mic at about a thousand dollars off. i mean, if you take it home and it sucks you can just return it.i say go for it... i think a shock mount is maybe a 100 at the most.

Who cares about the U87!
Forget about her!
There are plenty of other beautiful mics our there that are a hell of a lot cheaper.

So, the guy wants a U87. Now the bashing starts? What do you suggest he gets? A Marshall $67 mic?

Come on. Stick to the point of the thread.

Might be a fair price with a return policy like that. No completed items on eBay, so I don’t know what the used ones are going for. The ones listed with a day or two left are around $1000. Who knows what they’ll sale for and there’s not usually a return policy. With 3 months to return it, you’re safe if you change your mind – I’d say go for it, take it home and see what you think.

OTOH, there’s lots of other great mics that can be had for $1500 and under. Brauner Phantom C ($1500), or Soundelux U195 ($1150) come to mind, Or, for $350 more, the Soundelux ifet7 ($1850) which is like having two high caliber mics in one! If I had $1500 of microphone money burning a hole in my pocket, I’d save up the extra $ and get that one. Way more versatile than the U87.

Or you could keep saving and get a nice Lawson.

For $1500 you could get a used BLUE Cactus or (for a bit more) a new Kiwi.

I have a U87i and I only paid $1300 for mine with no shockmount. I think $1500 is a bit high. So do I like it? Of course it sounds good on almost everything, although a bit dark at times.

My reasoning was that I will eventually record people for money at my own studio, so why not go ahead and get one of the "standard" vocal mics. If it is for home use, I would definately say get something like a Lawson L47. It isn't that much more and I have never heard of anyone that didn't like it.

There's a Soundelux iFet7 on ebay right now for about $1.4k. I would go with an iFet7 before I would go with the U87.

might i ask what store? if you want a u87 here in atlanta.. i say check out atlanta pro audio.

as for the u87.. great mic no doubt about that...but after a session i had today i know what my new fav mic is....

Shure KSM44.. it sounded smoother, more open and just overall more natural than the u87ai we used today.. yea i know its the u87ai, but none the less.. the KSM44 had a great sound to it... after reading some reviews after using it.. i see a lot of ppl compare it to the u87 at a fraction of the cost.. yea i know plenty of other companies do too.. but the shure ksm44 is a workhorse
the preamp we used was a peavey VMP2.... i can't stop saying good things about this mic.
we had the u87ai setup and the singer was about 6inches from it.. the ksm had more vocal presence with the girl over a foot away from the mic.. and when she got close...WOW..
i plan on getting one very soon.. check into it.. its not neumann.. but it damn sure sounds like one and on SOME things sounds better..

if not the u87.. check out the Blue kiwi.. great mic.. i love the sound it has..its a little more.. i think they go for 1600 at guitar center..

Alas cruel fate...
I went there today to put it on layaway. It was gone. The empty shelf sent me into shock. Someone just nabbed it yesterday. And for 1400 cash. Who ever you are out there, stupid mic stealer....

Screw you buddy!!!!

Think of it as a blessing in disguise.

It probably is a blessing in disguise. So the KSM 44 is good? Whats the going price for those? The place I found the u87 was at a small place in Stone Mtn. called Galaxy Music. Where is Atlanta Pro at?
