Hey. I´m just wondering if I could use my tascam TSR-8´s serial port to sync the machine with my computer sequencer? Or what it can do and does it need some software to work? It would be nice to get computer and TSR-8 to work together, is it possible? And bytheway that tascam´s midi sync box is very hard to get here finland, so I need to stick with that serial port, if it´s possible.

Even if the serial port is used in syncing, you still need a sync box, because you still need something to generate the control signals.

But, you can go the other way around, and sync the computer to the Tascam. It's much easier.

Yes, you'll still need a sync box, but any box that can generate MTC from an SMTP striped tape should do it. There are many of those.

The JL Cooper PPS-1 or PPS-2 are both great choices for low-cost sync boxes. They are easier to find then the Tascam units.

I've used the PPS -1 since it came out and it has worked flawlessly.

I also have a TSR-8 and I wish the serial port actually did something useful by itself, but it really doesn't.

The only thing I've found of interest regarding the serial port is a software program called Taspunch, which lets you control punch-in from your PC. The readme files from the program have some good info on the TSR/MSR serial port.

OK. Many thanks for your help. I hoped it would have worked without a sync box, but I just have to find one now.
