i've recorded to .wav files before but suddenly i can't. i can plug into the card, and hear audio through my pc speakers, but when i try to record, i get no levels and nothing is recorded. i have turned up the line input level, it is not muted, and still nothing. i have un and re-installed my soundcard drivers also. i'm using a soundblaster card. any advice/help is appreciated...thanks.

ok, a little update here.
i apparantly can record, i can go to the dir. i record to and the file name is listed as well as the file size, but when i play it back, there is nothing. also when the file opens in sound recorder, there is no waveform showing in window, just a flat line.
one more thing i just discovered also, i tried to play .wav files i've downloaded and cannot hear those either. i've also converted mp3's to .wav and i cannot hear those, but i can hear mp3's.
i'm baffled.
once again, any help or advice is appreciated.

forget my last post. i can play back .wav files, just not ones i try to record. i can still record and get a file recognized but it is still empty, no waveform or audio.

I would like to be of help, but I've had EXACTLY the same problem with my AWE32 soundcard. I could previously record WAV's, now nothing. I've connected my CD player to the soundcard in and could hear the output happily from my soundcard out, but NO recording levels from any software recording application. I hear absolutely nothing when I playback the new WAV.

I've decided my card isn't good enough for my needs anyway so I'm upgrading, but most strange. (I've also read this problem a number of times on this site.)

I hope the problem goes away with my new card, else I'm going to be mightily upset!!!

Mikey.

Kyda, I've just sorted out my problem, it may help you. Previously, to check all my volume levels, I've been using the SB AWE32 mixer.

But I've just found the Windows volume control panel which I never knew I had (red face). You can set the playback volume and recording volume for all your inputs (MIDI, Line In etc...) Although my recording volumes were OK, none were selected! I'm sure I haven't recently gone in and switched all this settings off as I never knew the program existed! I can only assume I installed some software which switched them all off for me!

Cheers,
Mikey.

mikey,
yes i've gone through that whole process too many times now ; )
however, i recently discovered when i go to properties, then recording, i cannot adjust the recording volume at all. the slider is greyed out and won't move, and it is set to the lowest (off) position. i'm lost...
but, like you i was already in the market for a new sound card also, so we'll see, although i don't think it's a sound card setting, something is wrong in windows...
