I need a Reaper tutor

Hi, throwing this out there, but I noticed you are clipping. I wonder if you need to turn down your mic input? Not sure if it is Reaper or Audiobox, but if there is a clipping on the input, it will shut off the mic. Trying turning it down to halfway just to make sure.

Oh, sorry about that, I was just experimenting with the volume. I've had it at a lower volume. Nothing.

One more thing. There is also a mixer volume. Make sure that is in the middle. That is used so that you can hear your voice over the output of the music. It is like a monitor mix. So you have a main, then a mixer, the main is, well the main. The mixer is the "monitor" mix. Just throwing ideas out there.

This probably shouldn't be set for "Don't Allow". Change it to allow and try again.

Questionable setting.webp

Also, FWIW I performed an extensive testing of microphones, only to establish that the problem has nothing to do with the mic. I got "clicks" with every mic I used; dynamic and condenser. AND (big and) I also detected "clicks" where there was no actual vocal signal (in other words, in between words) and I detected more of what I've called "ghost clicks" because when you rewind to listen again, they're gone. So again guys, I strongly suspect the interface box, but I need to get Reaper working to prove it. I suppose I could try another free DAW.

Cakewalk by Bandlab is free. I've never used it, but it's available. Cakewalk was around years ago. Gibson took it over and pretty much killed it. Bandlab acquired it, along with Sonar.

Thank you so much. I will look into them.

Talisman - good news and bad news. I installed Cakewalk and it recognized my system perfectly. I created a track and recorded some vocals. BUT - and this is just weird - I am unable to save/download my recording. When I click on save or export, I get an error window saying that neither is "allowed" or "activated" and I have no idea how to do that. Naturally, I want to send a copy of the recording to PreSonus Support. But for me, the bottom line is, those "clicks" were present in the Cakewalk track, which means.....drum roll.....that the Audiobox 96 is the culprit. IMO.

Wait! I think I solved the Cakewalk thing. I had to create an account and then "activate" Cakewalk. I'm about to find out if I was successful....

Well folks, that's a wrap!! I successfully recorded some vocal track using Cakewalk and sure enough, there were "clicks" in the track. And the only elements involved were: my Audiobox 96, my studio mic and brand new cable, and Cakewalk. The "clicks" are clearly audible. Meanwhile, I've been having dialogue with PreSonus Support. I can't WAIT to hear what THEY say the cause of the problem is. Because if they don't admit to the Audiobox (for which Talisman has provided a link to a forum where several users are complaining about the same issue), I'm going to stuff the Cakewalk up PreSonus where the sun don't shine.

Well, I hate to say it, but the interface would have been my last guess since I have not read or know of any issues with the little USB box interface. Hopefully you can grab another interface and find your favorite DAW and get to recording. Hopefully this event doesn't turn you away from recording since you have all of the true fundamentals of recording.

Hoping you record something soon and post in the MP3 clinic, looking forward to hearing some of your stuff.

That's certainly good news. It definitely proves it's the hardware, not Presonus One. Sorry we couldn't figure out the issue with Reaper, but the result is confirmed.

If you do get another interface and want to try another DAW, there's Ardour, which is another completely free DAW. It's one that is often recommended by Linux users, since it's available for multiple platforms. I tried it, but I've gotten so used to Reaper that it wasn't worth the effort to try a new system.

Thank you so much for your patience and assistance. And I'll get back to you when I've installed my new interface. I'm looking at a Focusrite Scarlett 4i4

I'll send you a few links to my work.

OK, so I need to replace my Audiobox96 with another USB interface. I've been looking at Focusrite units, but can't make much sense of the differences. Anyone here using a Focusrite interface? If so, why did you choose the one you did?

There are a ton of people using Focusrites. It's probably the most popular brand among the home recording market. I have a buddy in Minnesota that uses a 2i2 for recording acoustic guitar and vocal. He has a laptop, not high powered, and uses Reaper. It works for him. I went with a Tascam back years ago. It's worked for me.

Every brand will have instances where someone has a problem, but it just seemed that the Prosonus had more instances that Focusrite or Motu or Behringer.

The Motu M4 is a very popular unit these days. It's priced similarly to the 4i4.
