After browsing the forums I KNOW a mic pre is a good thing but how much better is it? I'm using the Delta 1010LT which has two mic pres on it.
If I use a separate mic pre how much better will it be?
If I use a mixer to pre amp how much better wil that be? (Yahmaha 12/4)
I know mic pre are better but why are they better and how does the difference realy sound?

If you spend $1000 per channel for a mic pre, it will be much better. If you are spending $75 per channel, not so much.

That's what I'm talking about!

Ok. Yes. We all agree it will 'sound' better. But better how? I mean higher quality? Sure. But what exactly does one hear as the difference?

I'd suggest to try it out. Behringer's MIC100 tube pre is like 50 bucks. At least in my case it made my vocals much deeper and more 'present'. Worth trying for that money!

The pros use words like "fuller" and "brighter" and "muddy" and "clarity".

Us grunts use words like $100 and $500.

But you can hear the difference. Spend the money and learn how to use them.

You will hear the difference. It is hard to describe... it's like more sonic information is making the trip from the mic to the recorder. It is also smoother sounding with no harsh high end. You might not describe the high end you are getting now as 'harsh' until you listen to the same source through a really nice preamp.
You can get good results from cheap preamps, but it is easier with good ones.

Thanks guys.

I knew I'd probably get the responses I got but I was hoping. I agree with what you guys are saying about trying it out. It's the only real way. But I live in Trinidad, that's in the Caribbean for those of you who don't know. So 'getting' equipment is what I say instead of 'buying' because buying online is one thing but shipping here is pressure! Thus trying out is not something I get to do. What I buy is what I use.
But thanks again.
