Tips on Mixing/Mastering/Recording Software?

Long story short, I have the means to get hold of a nice new MIDI keyboard (Midiman Radium49 49-Key USB MIDI Controller) and an 8-track digital recorder (Fostex MR-8 8-Track Digital Recorder). If not already clear, this leaves me with little left over for software.

So I come to my question: can anyone recommend software that will work with this equipment? I am looking for a program that will mix and master, preferable of a sort that can work on both Mac and PC--though if I had to choose one, I'd lean more toward Mac. I'm not saying "the cheaper the better", but I would like to try and get the absolute most for my money. I don't need anything exceptionally fancy--just something that will accept what I record on the digital recorder and what I input through the midi keyboard, mix them, and turn the result into an MP3 or a CD.

Thank you in advance for all your help. If I'm not being specific enough... well, tell me. Thanks.

I though the MR-8 was a sort of a porta studio 8-track? If you are using Computer software you would not need it just record in the software you will get a lot more then 8-tracks

If your looking to do a lot of MIDI work I would recomend MOTU's Digital Performer but getting the interface and software might break your budget.

I think the best value is probably the Digi001. Not as MIDI friendly as DP but still pretty flexible.

I could not recomend any other computer then a mac I have both pc and mac and OS X is the best availble right now in my opinion

I'm sorry if I wasn't specific enough. Allow me to elaborate; I only mentioned the 8-track because I'd like to be able to transfer what I record on that directly into the computer. I want a program that can handle that, as well as a MIDI keyboard. I assumed that was standard up until recently, so I just want to make sure I get the most out of my investment.

Thank you for responding. The Mac is looking more and more like the way to go, alright. I'm also interested in digital movie making, so... yeah. An "adventure in technology" is imminent.

What kind of music will you be recording?

Also how much do you want to spend on the computer and software? approx.

We'll call it "guitar of all varieties". Rock and roll, punk, ska, classical, jazz, etc. Electric, acoustic, bass. Vocal, too, and the whole MIDI keyboard thing. Just trying to find something that will make it all work.

I'm making a desperate attempt to set a limit at $400. But I'd really, REALLY rather not even get up that far.

Thanks for the response, by the way.
