Tinnitus

Ear muffs to me are furry things to stop your ears getting cold... are you talking about those or about the noise reduction headphones that construction workers wear, which, except on gayer building sites, are usually sans fur...

Yeah, the noise-reduction ones :D :laughings:

One thing to be careful of using industrial ear protection while making or mixing music the the rather skewed frequency response some of these can give. As you know from acoustically treating your studio, it's much easier to deal with high frequencies than low and the same applies to hearing protection which can often give you a very bass-heavy response. For simple protection isn't a bad thing since the HF content can do a lot of the damage but it isn't great when you're judging how you sound.

Even the specialist protection for musicians isn't exactly flat--but it comes a lot closer!

That's why I use my crappy ipod earbuds with my hearing protection. They are such pieces of junk that there are no bass frequencies to worry about :)

I had a shock recently when I started using headphones again after a long time.I'd had tinnitus on and off for years and had always attributed it to all the heavy metal concerts I'd attended as a kid, anyway started using headphones and nothing at all in the left ear so swopped them around and still nothing in the left ear. Conclusion? Well ,it's the not the cans that are broke. I was seriously depressed for days thinking I'd lost the hearing in my left ear completely then it came back ever so slightly only sounded like what I can best describe as being a very old speaker with a torn cone hidden in a cupboard in a different room somewhere.
So,I go to the doctor and he says I have glue ear or a build up of stuff inside the ear drum.Something common in kids apparently and the problem was with a blockage in my Eustachian tube, turns out some scrap I'd gotten into where my nose got broke had affected the sinus which in turn affects how well the Eustachian tube drains fluids from the ear which is now giving me problems with fluid and general gunk drainage from the ear.Sorry for all the technical terms but I'm sure you understand, hope so anyway.
So now I'm trying all kinds of decongestants and stuff.Whiskey worked for a day or 2 very well but then lost it's affect.
In a way I'm happy because I know that there's been no significant damage to the ear and maybe if my lotto numbers ever come up maybe I'll be able to afford some kind of sinus work to help clear the problem up but until then it's trial and error with different over the counter stuff.
