I got to say I'm an Onyx believer. I bought a small 1640 Onyx for my live gigs. Really nice pre's an pretty good eq's. For the money I dont think you can beat them. Better than the Octopre I think. I dont know why the Onyx series only has firewire for its up to 16 channel mixers? ie.1220 1620,1640 . I'd like their 32x4 to be firewire but it seems not. I'll tell you running older mixes through it is real nice. Sounds very true and I seem to be able to trust what I hear. I have had many consoles that their eq's and even straight channels seem to color (IN A BAD WAY) the sound.
 
I have an Onyx 1220 for recording and just love it. I really like the sound of the preamps and EQ. I just send the signal through the 1220 then assign it to a channel on my Tascam 2488; it improves the sound quite a bit. It is a pity that you cannot use the EQ through the firewire though..

just bought a 1640 the other sday for 750. used 2 times, and it came with a pelican case. super nice. i disagree about the firewire thing. when you EQ, you EQ it to sound good in the room or whatever, but when recording you want it to sound good coming out of speakers. flat response is better.
 
+1 on the onyx stuff. i have a 1640 that i love, and have a buddy who's having great success as a metal producer using an 800R into an RME fireface

and it is possible to use the EQ when tracking if you want to get creative with the signal flow - just EQ the track to taste, then aux send it to another channel's line input, and it will hit the A/D converters on the 2nd input channel. if you study the signal flow diagram in the manual, there's a lot of work-arounds for some of the supposed restrictions of the board. the only thing that really seems set in stone is that you're only going to get 2 channels back to the board thru the firewire.

I picked up one of the Satillites primarily for it's portablity and monitoring capabilities... but was pleasantly surprised by the pres... for the price

i'm pretty sure you can get a firewire card for all the onyx.... are you sure you can't? those big 48 channel babies look nice for recording.

Not the 24-channel and up versions.

i mean using it as a PA. you do a live show, and record it. you EQ the mxer to sound good in the room. just because it sounds good in the room doenst mean that it will through headphones or speakers. it requires post-eq, to sound good for that.
 
ahh, gotcha

i was assuming use in a recording situation, not live...as i suppose i should've, given the nature of the original post

yea it is

however, it is possible to daisy-chain 2 of the 1640's together to make a 32-channel console, but i don't think there's that many people who really need 32 ins and only 2 outs
