those things.... small diaphrams, diagrams

Hello,

I have heard that some people prefer to record vocals through small diaphragm condenser mics, especially opera singers, because they are more accurate than large diaphragms.

I have heard that the earthworks tc30ks and the Neumann KM 184 are great, but they are above my budget.

I would like to get one and I would like your recommendations as to which is the best for a budget of about $300

ALso, does one have to use a special kind of preamp for a small diaphragm mic?

finally, is it a risk to get them used, i.e do they change characteristic over time?

Small-diaphragm condensers offer better transient repsonse than their large-diaphragm counterparts. This isn't to say that performance suffers on the large ones, but (especially) for sharp percussive sounds, small-diaphragm mics may respond more quickly and accurately.

What do you think I'm gonna say? Sounds like a PERFECT job for an Oktava MC-012 from The Sound Room only for $300US!

Also, you if you don't mind spending about $100US more, you might look into the DaviSound DS-1950.

Actually, in about a month, I'm putting in my order for a matched-pair of them. They won't be ready for quite awhile after that though. Once I get them, a sample or two will be put on that page from me.

I record mostly classical music and opera singers.
I use a large diaphram microphone as a spot mike for the vocal (AT 4033) and I have a stereo pair to pick up the piano and vocal with the room ambience (I record on location in very nice acoustic places). For that I use KM184 in an ORTF configuration. Actually I use other mikes along the ORTF, but that's the basic idea.

that sounds like a pretty good idea. I have read in many places about the "mc012 from the sound room" but I thought it was basically a large diaphragm with replaceable capsule. I am wondering how the small capsule sounds though?
