Those Expensive Plug-ins Really Worth the Price?

I see lots and lots of expensive fancy looking UI'd plug-ins, tons of em in the Sweetwater catalog. Are they that much better that they are worth the many hundreds of dollars in additional cost over the more cost effective brands? Many times the subtulties get lost in a mix anyway.
Software can be very expensive...and you can't easily sell it off/transfer ownership like you can a piece of gear.

UAD-1 plugs have been worth every penny. Much, much better than the Sonic Foundry plugs I was using before. I'd buy a 2nd one if I had the cash.
 
I''ll throw in another vote for the UAD collection - And it's got nothing to do with the interfaces.

On top of that, there always seems to be a reasonably healthy market for the used seller - By making the software dependent on hardware, the actual value is better maintained than with a lot of other plug companies.
 
I have known that the UAD-1 plugs maintain value. At least for the present time that is. That DSP card is really a crafty security technique. And what about software that uses a dongle key? That does not seem to maintain the same value.

I've always thought a website that specialises in aftermarket software only sales is needed. The ebay auction format is not as applicable for software.

Some software allows the transfer of license, others do not. This is a grey area for software vendors and really should be sorted out. I can understand they don't want multilple unlicensed copies floating about but something needs to be done for the license owner so he can sell and move on without takeing a big hit.

There are some expensive plug-ins that are worth the cost. There are also tons of cheap/free ones that are too (that are comparable).

Keep an eye on the bbs to see what people recommend and experiment with the freebies.

While yes, the Dsp card does work as a sort of security technique, the biggest advantage to it, is that when using the plugins it does not tax your system at all. All the processing is done on the card.

Most high quality plugins, are cpu hogs, but with the DSP card, your cpu does none of the processing.
 
I would venture to say that a good software plugin, like the Bombfactory Pultecs, sounds about 100 times better than a generic Steinberg or CEP EQ plugin.

So yeah, they are worth the price if you care about sound.
