I'm thinkin that in the verses the drums get a little too low...

During the choruses, it sounds fine.

During the solo, there's some hissy, noisy thing going on in there... scratchy... hmmm...

Should I paraphrase? :D

have you tried: compressing the drums?

Not the kick/snare... but the tom toms? Might be worth a shot; just see if it helps.

If you decide to, try a slow attack (12ms or something to start)... and a release that goes with 1/8th or 1/4 notes...

Now, this song is at 81.3 (iirc from the drums)... that means it goes at .738 seconds/beat. Try a release of 1/2 that... or .364 (364ms)..

(subtract the attack time off that, actually... so 352ms....)

NOW FOR MY QUESTIONS:
*Is anybody listening to this really REALLY loud? I think the level on the (muddy) bass is too hot, but it sounds SOOooo cool with that Kick drum, that I'm trying to EQ around it. Is the level on the bass okay?

Don't trust my monitoring environment(s) enough to know... would have to burn/listen...

*Who agrees the drums are "buried?"

*ahem* :D go up a few posts

*Is there anything wrong with rolling off the lows on the distorted gits like I do with acoustics so that I can turn them up LOUD?

Try it. If it sounds good, it is.

ok, who's the joke on here??:D my god, chris, you made me use the word "wizardry" LMAO!!!!

fenderlikingood means "GULLIBLE", in chinese.

ya'll are killin me!!:D

Thank's for clearing that up, Jamal!
Fender...Jamal's a lot of things, including a liar. Listen on the right side during the second chorus..."na na na na"...that horrible noise that gets louder, that's the distorted vocal. Almost sounds like a bullhorn.

I swear it's real. Don't be duped by moody songwriters with poor grammar. I DON'T LIE. :D :D :D

The new tracks sound really good. I think the mix is a little rythm heavy and is robbing the song of a bit of dynamics.

It's great you guys are all pitching in recording this. I think it's going to turn out killer.

QUIT BITCHING ABOUT THE SOLO ALREADY...LOL. I'm NOT re-doing it. BAHAhahaha...

i dont know what to say about the solo other then i love it...but that is fine ..im sure i like lots of stuff you would hate ...

LMAO-Sorry Chris-What can I say?? Actually-given the length of the solo-and the changes it goes through-you played admirabley-I just don't like solo's too much in general. I would have felt less than honest if I didn't mention it though..Anyway-enough about the solo.

I think the mix is coming along nicely-Definetely is sounding presentable to me. I still hear sibilance in the vocs-have u tried finding those "S's" with an eq? In the 6-8k range I thinks??

And Jamal-I might have understated this but this is a GREAT friggin tune! Very catchy-Hopefully someone will hear it for the commercial potential it has-and you done good getting Chris and the others on the case-your talents are being showcased very well.

I'm at work till 8am so I'm going to listen to this some more. If I have any more uninformed opinions to offer-I'll be sure to do so-otherwise, looking forward to the finished product. I'd like to hear the very first version again-to see the overall change. Possible?

Good luck-I'm sure you'll have a great final product by monday.

this is cool sounding. i think the mix sounds awesome.

neat song.

crappy guitar solo, by the way.

i like the ending a lot, because that's when the song is over.

sike, this is really cool. the ending is really cool. the whole sonng is.

Jamal, dawg, focusing 1st on the perfs, I was impressed, forceful
and strong with the vocals taking charge most hard! Git action
captured nicely ,bass can use a lil more defintion and a db or 2 levelling. Drum kit on point with just a slight, cleaner translation of the kick! Got no probs with the vocs as it was most impressive!
Listened to it 3 times at Hi-Vol and head-bopped myself to dizzness! Luv'd the tempo & structure of this bad-boy!

This joint jams Jamal!!

:D :D :D
Stark silence about the solo...that's all I ask. :D

But seriously man, I wouldn't want anything less than honesty from you or anybody else: the problem is that I agree with you, so it's like a daggar to my temple whenever it comes up, b/c it's not my tune. What's his name actually likes it, for some reason...I'm just gonna' keep burying it deeper in the mix...LOL.

Anyway, I'm burning some midnight oil too...the same mix is up that was there last night, so that sibilance is still gonna' be there :D ...trying to get another one up in an hour or so. I know the bass will improve DRAMATICALLY when Guernica is able to throw one down in the morning. I'm just posting this ridiculously long-winded note to give my ears a rest.

Later,
Chris

Great job.

I've made it a rule now, not to read any posts on a thread until after I've posted - I find it taints my ears. So I apologize if I repeat something already posted. That being said .....

I love what you've done with this song - especially the bg vox. I've got it cranked right now and I'm shaking the house.

Every so often, I hear a song on this board that has that "mastered" feel to it. This is one of them. Congrats.

If I could change anything ....

Personally, I'd prefer to hear the "pipe" at the end of the song, gradually fade in.

Finally, I hate to say it, but the lead guitar solo should be changed. Sorry Chris - cause I do respect the stuff you post on this board. As it is, it sounds like a collection of riffs without a theme. Additionally, I think I hear some "fat-fingered" notes. Once changed, I'd bring it up in the mix.

But, as they say, "Opinions are like assholes, everyone's got one".

MIXING IS HARD

YOU DON'T WANT ME TO DRIVE,
I'M JUST HERE FOR THE RIDE.

That's me. Anyhoo...After reading all of your suggestions, I have decided to remove me left hand from my body and never play guitar again. :D :D

And there's a new mix uploading to my site if Jamal's isn't working.

"LAST HURRAH"

It almost IS the last Hurrah, too, b/c Guernica has done a bass line to finish the tune up, but this is still crappy me on bass. As soon as I get Guernica's, I'll take whatever you guys throw at me and add it in."

Crunch time. Anybody who heard the one Jamal posted a couple of days ago (Stratomaster) please fill us in. I'm only doing one more mix probably (with Guernica's bass).

the vocals sound a little siblant on my speakers....it might be just be my speakers........i like the song........it has good dynamics.....nice chorus.........i like the soaring harmonies in the back too...........good work

This sounds better than the last one to me. I caught myself almost playing air guitar listening to this cranked on the headphones lol.

Hey D:

which one did you listen to? I'm trying to get Jamal to delete his, but he's sleeping or something...LOL. Did you listen to the one on his page or mine?

Remix sounds good, chris.... I'm guessing jamal's guitar/vox trax are just a tiny bit noisy... some high fuzz in there... you've done very well.

Next up to bat... G on the lowend...

Sounds very good-Sounds brighter and louder-The voice takes charge from the beginning-and stays on top-The background vocs seem smoother now-Drums get a little lost occasionaly-but with all those great vocal tracks...You can hear him catching his breath after he says "anger" kinda hurts the flow for a half a sec. But other than that-it's sounding great- Your doing a nice job-it should only get better from here.

You're doing a good job Chris.I really like the guitar solo.I dont know what the others are complaining about.Hell, modern rock music NEEDS a lead guitar to bring it back to life.Hell,I'll go a step further....I could go on about how bands today dont play solos because they dont know how to play their instrument well enough to play a solo but I wont.

Good job on the mix. It's sounding good. Those backing vocals are awsome.I think I can hear your voice in there too.Are you singing some of those parts?
