Thinking of getting into Managment...

I am thinking of getting into the promotions/management side of the business. I live in a small town outside a major metro area, so I could kinda start in a small arena and work my way up if things go well.

What are some typical arrangements between manager and band out there (%'s etc.)?

What are the major responsibilities that a GOOD manager has when it comes to managing bands?

What are some things that a manager should NOT be expected to do for band, but is commonly asked?

Any websites/links you guys have that might help me would be appreciated!

--MANAGER GETS 10% OF WHAT THE BAND MAKES--ON ALL "GIGS" AND "SALES" THAT THE MANAGER DIRECTLY BRINGS IN . . . I.E. SHOWS BOOKED, STORES THAT AGREED TO SELL BAND'S MUSIC BASED UPON THE MANAGER'S WORK

--SECURE PERFORMANCES (AT LEAST ONE/MONTH, PREFERABLY PAID--BUT AT LEAST IN PLACES WHERE LIKELIHOOD OF CD SALES IS HIGH, AFTER PERFORMANCE
--SECURE OTHER PUBLIC AWARENESS (I.E. LOCAL TV SHOW INTERVIEWS, LOCAL MAGAZINE INTERVIEWS
--SECURE LOCAL/COLLEGE RADIO STATION SPINS/INTERVIEWS, PERFORMANCES

--PAY MY BILLS/DEBTS

On ewya to get in, that is kinda popular around here, is to find a club that regularly has live music, and get in with the club as "the guy that books friday nights". Now the club gives you the club on friday's to book. You are responsible to bring the club X$ no matter what(plus they get all profit from booze and normal bar stuff). So you go and find the best bands you can, and bring them into the club, and hopefully the cover will be enough to pay the club and the bands. A lot of up and comers around here dont even get paid for the first year that they gig, and that makes it easier on the guys booking the clubs.

By doing things this way, you will get to see a lot of bands, and you will probably(if you are good) start booking out into other clubs, and with more bands, only it will start to be more on your terms and not on the bar's terms.


Just telllin' ya how it is around here, and maybe it would be an idea to try at a local place if ya could?

Other option is to find bands, and find a venue(a hall, older bar, small arena, etc) and look into what it costs to rent, and throw your own concert, bring yoru own bands, promotoe it yourself, and hire any crew that you think you need(depending on size of venue, etc) This way is tougher but you standf to make a lot more money.

Again, not saying that this is how it goes, just sayin that this is how it goes around here!

Gully, I checkde out your tunes on my space - I would be glad to help but I am a metal head, and the circles I run in are all 'metal' types (clubs, bands, promoters, etc). I really wouldn't even know where to start for hip-hop type venues.

Any more info/advice about getting into promotions/managment?

well all i can say is that there is a gold mine waiting to be tapped in the hip hop market cuz there is virtually no one doing for unknown hip hop artists what there is a plethora of folk doing for metal, pop, etc.

but hell, thats MY lost

ahmmm -- more advice about promotions/management?
figure a w ay to cross the genres . . . there should be a large audience of people who like both rock music and rap music (i know i am one)

work on drawing THAT crowd . . . then u kill two birds with one stone
