Gretsch black duo-jet - for all around Neil Young - alt-country roots rockish stuff.

Rickenbacker 3xx 12 String

I know a lot of guys like 30 watts - any other ideas for a good hybrid amp -I may blend it with the sound of a clear 15 watt Fender Tweed in recording

Fender Vibrolux. Brown on Oxblood. White knobs. That way you can add a Tele at any time and have rootsrock covered completely.

I agree with those above and say simply Fender tube anything. They growl and roar and in general have a thicker distortion than modern marshalls when you crank them.

The hotrod series would provide extra drive channels in the event you think the twin wouldn have enough grind to it.

My favourite amp in the world, Fender "The Twin" red knob series or Dual Showman red knob series, which is the same thing in a head version. Eminence "Red White and Blues" speakers. Sound heaven.

This gets my vote!

Well, Neal Young plays an old 5F6 Bassman, though he has had it modded with some motorized knobs!

I believe Neil mostly plays a 5E3 Deluxe? (rumour is he has dozens of tweed Deluxes).

Agreed with the 'whizzer' motorized knob controller though...

I'm pretty sure I read it was a Bassman, but it's been a while since I read anything about it, and I'm not a huge fan, so I could well be wrong.

Hell, it's probably both, for that matter.

On the "rust never sleeps" tour/film there are huge tweed Bassman stage props on either side, which is confusing. His signature sound is a '59 Deluxe re-tubed with 6L6's rather than 6V6's. He feeds another early Magnatone tube amp, and a Baldwin tube amp with a padded signal from the ext. speaker jack of the Deluxe. The "Whizzer" device is a servo-controller with pre-sets for each of the Deluxes controls.

Back to the original question - Check out any <50W Fender amp from before the mid 70's and you're there. Tweeds will be more Neil sounding.

'59 Deluxe is right for Neils tone, those Bassmans were just some outrageously cool props! But he has his own custom pedal too, that one on the cover of Ragged Glory.

This amp drives any guitar sound.

Lots of push and power from Marshall JCM 800 Lead Series......just hook up different pedals and play away. Not a bunch of knobs........just simple power at your call.

Seriously check out the new VOX AC15CC.

I have 2 gresches and 2 ricks and this is THE amp for them. I have a few nice tube amps including a Deluxe Reverb RI and the AC15CC shines way above them.

Lush Beatles vibe.
