Hey, everyone. We have a new tune/mix up and new questions to ask you… The latest song is called “Solace” and it’s the first song listed at http://www.mp3.com/30SoS

My primary concern with this mix (and future ones) is trying to get more of a separation between the instruments. Right now, I feel like I have one big 'bass-itar' instead of distinct guitar and bass tracks. I’m using my POD for both (which I’m sure is part of the problem), but beyond that, does anyone have any suggestions on how to separate these two sounds?

Please take a listen and let me know your thoughts on this (or if I’m hearing things) or any other aspect of the mix, song, etc. Danke!

Very good song again... Awesome part in the middle. Personally I there are several places you could do doubled vocals.

In my suck-o-headphones I'm using at the moment the guitar / bass is excellent.. To me they do sound separated and sound very good together... Only thing is I seem to recall that the drums sounded uh... "cooler" on Misery...

Maybe the guitars could use a little more "edge" for presence, but that might be the headphones screwing me again..

Good song.. keep em coming.

Thanks for all the comments, Meshuggah. Yeah, the middle was fun (and challenging) -- a self-imposed clinic in audio editing. We're quite pleased with the way it turned out, though...

With the vocals, are you thinking harmonies or just doubled in unison for thickness? I'm doing some straight unison doubling on our next song, but mainly because it's a little slower and the chorus could use some help...

It's good that the guitars and bass sound distinct to you. If you give it another listen on better speakers, let me know if your opinions changes (though it's possible I'm overanalyzing...). And oddly enough, the drums are the same as on 'Misery' -- same drum machine, kit, etc. I think 'Misery' just gave them more space (though there's always vast room for improvement with a drum machine)...

Thanks again for the input. Anyone else have other thoughts on the guitar/bass issue, the overall mix, song, etc.?

defenitely some harmonies.. I think that would make a nice touch.

Hey, it was listening to your stuff, that made me decide to get a POD type thing. Direct can sound good. You get some really good guitar tones.

Wound up with the DG Stomp.

I'm thinking doubled vox at the chorus too. Bass is a tad buried. I suffer from the same.

Cool

I'm listening to your songs in a pair of big Genelecs.

I like the bass sound. A very good job.

The drums would be the thing I don't like. Particularly in "Solace" they don't really fit in. They sound much better in "Job's song"

Overall, "Solace" isn't your best song.

But I'm impressed... and inspired.

Thanks for the comments everyone...

Meshuggah -- there are actually some harmonies in the chorus of "Solace" (though the are kind of mixed under). I'm not much of a harmony singer (or a singer in general), but I am trying to work them in a little more.

jet-rocker -- I'm not familiar with the DG Stomp, you'll have to let me know what you think (I'm always looking for cool gear) ;)

fimpen -- thanks for the comments. we're with you on the drums. We'd love to record real ones but we're too cheap/inexperienced to take that on... I didn't think they sounded much worse or better from song to song, but I may have to go back and re-listen. It's essentially the same kit for each.

I'd also agree that "Solace" may not be our best tune (though we're still pretty pleased with it). Out of curiosity, what do you think is the best song we currently have posted? Also, I see on your location that you're at a music school... are you a teacher or student? Either way, I have to ask... what letter grade would you give "Solace" (and what grade would you give to the song you feel is our best)? Just curious... Regardless, I'm flattered that we both impressed and inspired you.

Thanks again for all the comments. Does anyone else have any thoughts or suggestions on this track? Let us know.
