The "other" compression article

Me and Shailat sort of teamed up on two different articles on compression.

Shailat's has audio examples or various settings of compression.

Mine explains what all the knobs do, and goes into some of my thoughts about using a compressor.

Both articles are linked to each other within the article.

So if you are reading Shailat's article, and need a little brushing up on what the knobs do, you can go to mine to get an explaination.

If you are reading mine, and want to hear what the knobs do, you can go to Shailat's article.

Please do excuse some of the spelling errors and punctuation. I have been working a lot lately and haven't had as much time to clean up both our articles to read better.

But I do think that if you are a little shakey about using compression, or in need of explainations, these are decent enough articles to get you on your way.

Gee, what a good article! That's the most useful one on compression I've come across so far. I wish I'd read it last week before giving that newbie such bad advice (sheepish grin). I thought the bits about hard knee/soft knee and the auto setting were really interesting. And of course, I was entertained by...

Ed, if I click on the link in this thread, it takes me to the compressor article. If I go to your website and click on the 'articles' icon, it doesn't seem to be listed there - the article called 'dynamics processing' is the link to the very short article on compression on the HR.com site.

I like the way you guys approached the articles - more like "teaching a man to fish" than "giving a man a fish". I learned a few things from the articles and examples and expect to learn more by experimenting with the concepts. Thanks for putting the time in to write them.

Interesting vocals, Ed. I read Shailat's article first and the surprise got me. Then when I read yours, the "hard knee vs. soft knee" section made me think that you were probably only one or two "hard knees" away from *really* nailing that MJ impersonation.
