Alrighty, here's the Splawn in action. Like all amps I get my hands on for the first time, I just went with everything on "5", or in this case, 12:00 since it has no numbers or notches around the knobs. This is my test run doing the Seek and Destroy riff for the br00tal metalz.

So first off, this amp has a Clean Channel which I can't access because I didn't grab the fucking footswitch. No matter for these clips, but I'd love to hear that Clean channel cranked.

The Overdrive channel has three gain modes - 1st Gear, 2nd Gear, and 3rd Gear.
1st Gear is supposed to be like a hot-rodded Plexi - and I think it does a pretty great job at that kind of sound
2nd Gear is a beefed up JCM 800 - yeah, okay, pretty close, but it still sounds more Plexi-ish to me, just with even more gain. Not a problem.
3rd gear is a JCM 800 set to destroy the universe - Whatever

There is also a "Solo" knob which to the best of my knowledge acts as a volume boost and a little bump of gain increase for leads. I don't know for sure because, again, I don't have the fucking footswitch and I hate it when amps aren't functional without it.

That's the idea with this amp. Each gear has way more gain than the amps they're designed after, which is pretty much the point with Splawn amps.

Gibson Les Paul Traditional - Burstbucker 3 bridge pickup
Splawn Quick Rod - 100 watt mode
All EQs at 12:00
Gain 12:00
Master vol 12:00
Marshall 1960A 4x12 - Celestion Greenbacks
Shure SM 57 on axis, on grill, just outside dustcap
No EQ or FX in DAW

SAD Splawn 1st gear

SAD Splawn 2nd Gear

SAD Splawn 3rd Gear

And a better kind of seeking and destroying....The Stooges "Search and Destroy"
Happy Splawn 1st Gear

Not bad at all. The low-mids sounded happier in 1st and 2nd gear, and they kind mushed out in 3rd. On that particular riff, it seemed happiest at higher gain levels just because the added saturation agrees with the palm mutes better.

I really like 1st and 2nd gear, they hold together pretty well and still have that aggressive Marshall bite to them. It gets lots of gain without getting fizzy (although it's starting to come close on that 3rd gear clip). The low end sounds tight too.

I bet that thing is a lot of fun to play through.

Seems like a pretty versatile amp. Just got back from the cinema and I'm in bed so only listened on earbuds so they all sound completely ice pick at the moment! I'll listen to them again tomorrow.

I noticed my guitar slip out of tune when I was fucking about earlier... But I thought fuck it, it's only a pedal and pickup demo!

So this is not the thing you guys are doing but maybe you have some thoughts on this clean tone. I really like it, but it could use some work so I thought Id seek your expert opinions. Guitar is an Epi Dot Studio and Im playing through a HoF reverb and a Joyo delay in the loop of my Blackstar ht studio 20 head. Mic is an ES-57 placed relatively close to the center of a V30(as per previous Gerg advice regarding the darkness of my amp) in an Orange 1x12 cab placed on axis about 1/4" off the grill. The mix of this is the track doubled and panned with some compression.

I like the tone overall, although that guitar has an odd sound to it, almost like a piezo or something. Brand new strings maybe? It just sounds metallic, for lack of a better word.

Cool song idea, and that delay pedal sounds really good.

Thanks! Yes brand new strings, just put them on yesterday afternoon. And for like $35 or whatever that pedal cost Im pretty happy with it!

Nice. I like the first the best.
Yeah me too. Actually I like the 1st gear Stooges clip best.

Thanks, yeah it's okay, and it sounds good. I like the 1st gear clips myself. 2nd and 3rd is just way too much gain. I need to do more goofing around with the amp actually dialed in better instead of just having everything at noon.

Lol. Ice pick? No way. Get some new earbuds. :D

I think it sounds pretty good. I kind of agree with Tad's description about the tin plonk sound, but it doesn't bother me.

Happy Splawn sounded good at the 35 sec mark - that part of the riff really works with that amount of OTness.
I think I like the SAD OCD - nasally but also 1/2 cocked Wah is.
Nice riffy thinig Liv, I can't work with delay - it confuses me so I forget about it.

Just got a chance to listen to all the clips...

Jdod: I like the OCD & the normal clip the best, seems pretty nasally/boxy at times dude, but they're not terrible...

Greg: I like the first 2 clips a lot, I can tell that amp's got a big 'ol bottom, it comes across in the clips here...Too bad you don't have the footswitch to use the rest of the features, because I like what I hear dude...I bet that is a kick-ass amp, & I'd love to have one, but they're damn expensive...

Liv: Pretty nice tone, a little dark, could use some sparkle IMO, but still pretty nice...I like the way you use your delay, & as mentioned, this could easily be turned into a song...

Miner you would freakin love this amp. I'm gonna try some sleazy GnR riffs tomorrow and see how it goes. It sounds better for that than the Metallica riff.

That's about what I thought man, it'd be like the Chupa, but built a little better (cosmetically, no idea about the innards, but I'm sure the Splawn ain't no slouch), with a few more features...I'd probably shit my pants if I ever got one because I really, really like the way that thing sounds man...

Crap, I realized that I skipped right over JDOD's stuff today. No offense man! I'll give a listen tomorrow. I'm falling asleep sitting up for now...

OK, so here's 4 versions of seek and destroy. All have the SD1 in front of them.

One is with the OCD as the drive. The others are using the amp but I've bumped the mids up slightly more than where I normally have them which has actually just introduced a minging midrange frequency.
One clip is using my amp at its normal preamp volume and gain settings.
One is with all volume and gain on full - you'll hear which one...

Then I dualed the OCD and the normal volume clip for shits and giggles.

I haven't played S&D in a while as you can probably tell!
I like the Dual clip best followed by the normal clip.
They all sound a little thin though .... maybe move the mic a little bit away from center.

that thing has tons of 'bonk to it ..... I like it!!!

I like that sound quite a bit ...... I'm not really hearing the oddness to the sound that others are hearing ..... sounds like a good clean to me.

greg...
I like the first gear clip the best. I will say this though. I have been listening to the original a few times to familiarize myself with it. On the original recording the 3 chords after the palm muted "chunka chunka" part has a very aggressive nasty brutal sound to it that none of the clips really nail. You may have to have a guitar equipped with those super hot "only good for metal" pickups to get that. Or, it my have had some kind of enhancement processing by the mix engineer in the studio. Whatever the case, it sounds bad ass.

JDOD...
I like the last clip and the duel clip the best. Overall the tone is thin though. Your guitar sound just needs a little meat on its bones.

Let me add this...I'm struggling to get a meaty but not muddy sound myself. So, I can tell you what it needs but I can't tell you how to get it.
lol

Greg,

Listened to them on my AKG reference cans now. The first and the third sound best - they all sound thick and heavy though, they sound like they're fucking loud! There seems to be a little bit of something nasty and buzzy creeping into the 2nd one - dunno why its not there in the 3rd (unless its just burried). Will be interesting to see what you can do when you really get this amp dialed in.

Anyway, something Bob said interested me - sounds like the mic is too close to the cap. I haven't adjusted my mic placement in ages - but I'm pretty pleased with the result of going about an 2cm further out from the cap.

Cheers, Jimi - I noticed the same thing myself and I made a couple of adjustments based on what Bob said. I like the result but doesn't sound huge like Greg's clips.

EDIT: I've recorded some adlib stuff with my normal tone but using the altered mic placement that Bob suggested yesterday.

There's a slightly buzziness around the edges but I think that would be absorbed pretty quickly in a mix.
