The New Tone Thread

Greg, I think your clip sounds pretty good - doesn't have the usual sort of meat that you go for but I'm sure it will be fine with a bass on there too. It is a bit flat though - doesn't sound special.

On chasing particular tones - its not something that I've ever really tried to do, I probably wouldn't know how, I'm just trying to get tones I like. Even when I've recorded covers, its not been about trying to emulate the tone of the original, just get something that I like the sound of and that I think sounds cool

greg...
I think you really nailed the Ramones guitar tone on the "road to poop" clip. I have read the other comments about it not being you usual fat sound and maybe a bit too bright, but IMO it sounds the way Johnny Ramone sounded back in the day.
good job

Thanks fellas. I'll be trying more later. I might try a different amp before doing the pickup swapping.

I'd like to hear you do a cover with your favourite tone, not try to do the original. Just smash it out with your favourite recorded guitar tone - you've done shit loads of good ones on here.

There's a lot of old stuff, particularly early Bad Religion, where I'd love to hear it covered with a really good guitar tone. The original guitars on Along The Way sound like shit.

Man I've done tons of covers. I usually use cover songs to test out different recording techniques. I don't waste original songs with experimentation. I have a covers album sitting and done that I just never released. It's like 40 fucking songs. Lol. Very little of it attempts to mimic the original sounds. It's all dumb Gregness hacking up famous and not-so-famous songs. :laughings:

I don't have a "favorite tone" though. I think my favorite tone is any tone that works for the song being played. It can be clean, light crunch, full roar, or metal madness. It's all good if it's appropriate.

Have you done anything that totally butchers the original? Like a punk version of Cindy Lauper or something?

Oh yeah. Probably about 70% of my covers totally butcher something that is either generally regarded as untouchable or needs to be butchered. Some of them stay pretty close to the original.

Holy shit, that's great. Downloaded that one as a keeper!

Haha. That one came out way better than I thought it would. The mix isn't great, but the whole metal to surfabilly changeover really worked out well IMO. That song totally lends itself to be done like that.

Since this is the tone thread, the guitars were....I can't remember. That was before I had the Mosrite clone, so it's definitely my red Strat. The amp is the question mark. Back at that time I had access to a Super Reverb and a Twin. Both Silverface. They weren't mine but I used them pretty often. I don't remember which one it is. It's all real Fender though. The trem and spring reverb is all amp.

Thinking of early Metallica, there's probably quite a few that would work in that sort of style particularly Ride The Lightning.

I suppose you live in a big city with lots of friends who all have decent gear where you can lend shit to eachother.
I don't really know anyone with better gear than me well enough where we could lend shit to eachother.. definitely not in Wales. I know a few decent musicians in Bristol but not that well.

Yup I know lots of people with lots of stuff.

One of my buddies, the guy that goes with me to all the guitar shops, he just bought some Ibanez shred thing. It's dayglo yellow and very pointy. Floyd Rose, sharkfin inlays, H/S/H, all that jazz. I was divebombing that bitch all over the place last weekend. He can shred all over the place, I can't. I just work the Floyd till the strings fall off and let it snap back. The neck on that thing has a 20" radius! So flat. It was like playing a fence picket.

Get him to help you with your musical theory!

My Ibanez is H-S-H with a 24 fret flat fretboard and Floyd Rose. Fortunately its bronze and has dot inlays.

He can't. He's like me, just self taught. He knows Dorians and Phrygians and all that crap, but he can't explain it or teach it. Believe me, I've picked his brain numerous times. He's like Lt Bob "just play it!". It's like me teaching someone how to play drums. I just can't do it. I can sit and play but I don't know how to explain drumming to someone that can't. He taught himself to shred by listening to EVH and Randy Rhoads for 500 years. He can fly all over the fretboard. He's not a very good rhythm player though. Great lead player, but I think I'm probably better at rhythm and chords and shit.

I don't think that amp is supposed to be "EVH tone". It was never about that. I think it's just a regular high gain rock amp that he may or may not actually have had anything to do with. So his lies and tall tales don't really have any bearing on the 5150/6505/EVH amps. He still sounds like himself, but he hasn't had that "brown sound" in over 40 years. They're great amps, I just have always thought it was misleading to have "EVH" plastered all over them.

Exactly dude, I knew it wasn't gonna be his "brown" sound way before I even got that amp. Who knows what kind of shit he did to get that sound all those years ago, it probably had as much to do with the studio production as it did with him, but he took it & ran with it....

I've never played through any of those other amps, but if they're anything like the 15w I've got, they're great rock & roll amps...

I'm actually working on a bunch of covers myself, only problem is I get one about half done, & start on another...I'd be afraid to say how many songs I've got in various stages, & I just keep adding to 'em....hahaha

Jdod, I'm working on a few fake drum instruments that I'm gonna give to you when I get 'em done. They're nothing spectacular, but will come in handy for your fake drums. Some of 'em have taken me a long time to get half-way decent, & some of 'em suck, but you're welcome to all you want of 'em when I get them finished...You'll need to talk to Greg about a few of 'em though, the rest are freebies I've downloaded here/there....

I think all of those Eddie amps are pretty good. The 5150, 6505, and EVH are all basically the same thing. The only changes have been very minor tone tweaks and name changes due to contracts expiring. They're all pretty good hard rock high gain amps.

Cheers, Miner. That would be great. My fake drums have got a load better - even some of my music mate's can't tell their fake now - but any help would be great.

Ah, I think I just have a knack for teaching and am very patient - I've taught a few people how to play guitar - I was giving a 4 year old and a 7 year old their first guitar lessons a couple of weeks ago. A mate of mine was there who is a primary school teacher. She was amazed by how good I was at explaining shit to kids in just the right bite sized chunks for them to grasp it. Its probably 'cos it didn't come easily to me and I've not got any sort of natural talent for it - I just had to graft like fuck!

You're an excellent rhythm player, mate. Your timing is always spot on. Drummers are always great rhythm players though - you can't fault Dave Grohl's rhythm playing.

Your fake drums are as good if not better than mine are now Jdod....These instruments are really simple, & really limited compared to what you're using, but they're recorded from real drums/cymbals, & have no processing on 'em at all. They're totally raw, just like you'd get if you were to record a kit in your apartment/spare room/whatever....They might sound odd to you at first, but you'll realize why: the stuff you're using now is processed before you even get to use it...It'll actually help you learn to mix drums better IMO...

I'm still working on 'em, but I do have a few of 'em done...Be sure to talk to Greg & let me know if/when you want what I've got....Some of 'em are his samples/sounds & he made it very clear not to share unless he gives me the green light for someone...Those that aren't his samples/sounds I got for free on the 'net (anyone can download 'em), I just made them into a Kontakt instrument to trigger with midi...

There's only one downside, you'll have to download & install the free Kontakt player to use 'em. I'm not sure but I think it times out after a while, but you can always bounce the tracks down, or save the project & re-open again....I'm not sure you'd wanna fool with it because of the time-out thing, but the offer's still here if you want it....

Thanks. I don't know, Dave Grohl is pretty much shit. I like his drumming though. He was more tolerable when he was a drummer that never talked or wrote or sang anything.
