Whoever it is it sounds like someone overdriving the desk in a really horrible way.

I can see why it might be Page. It's the same sound as "Communication Breakdown". I think they were auditioning guitar players at that time and the Stones are notorious for having guest players that they don't credit. Doesn't sound like Page's playing though, to me. Just the sound.

It would be really hard to tell if its anyone else or who it is. The lick doesn't sound unlike Keef, although there are some fairly quick hammer ons in there which aren't necessarily his thing.

if its someone else, like say Jeff Beck, he's probably just plugged into the rig that was in the studio. So it could be anyone. Its probably Keef though.

Yeah, it's hard to say. I've never heard Keef play anything like that. I don't even think he plays that solo live. On "Get Yer Ya Ya's Out" Mick Taylor and Keef both solo, but neither one comes anywhere close to playing or sounding like the studio solo. The second solo I do in my clip is actually Mick Taylor's solo from that live album.

But the majority consensus is that it is Keith either way. I sort of like these little mysteries, as un-important as it is. It's fun.

WTF are yall talking about anyway?

---------- Update ----------

The razor sharp, thin sounding solo from the studio version of "Sympathy".

That too.
Pretty certain Keef can't play like that any more, his hands are fucked - he's still a great rhythm player though.

Fuck that's weird. Do you notice the "normal" guitar underneath it? When that raspy razor tone dies off, there's a hint of a cleaner tail. It doesn't soun double tracked, so maybe it's string ring or feedback or something.

Doubt it would be string ring or feedback 'cos it sounds like its straight into the desk which is causing that really raspy distortion. It could be the signal dropping down below the threshold where it distorts.

Never noticed that until now. I still can't believe how thin and weird that sound is. One of the weirdest guitar sounds I've ever heard, and not necessarily in a good way.

Sounds like a fuzz pedal to me.

I think this is why people think it might be Page. Even though this is more buried, but it's a nicer sound than "Sympathy"...and the playing is better.

Cued at the solo:

Yup, similar. The lick sounds like the first few licks to the solo on Heartbreaker too.

Whatever that is underneath the nasty solo on Sympathy is also panned a little different. You can hear it jump out occasionally. Weird.

Yeah! You're right. That quick flurry of notes, very similar thing.
That super thin cutting tone was pretty common back then. Not the razor rasp as on Sympathy, but that thin-ish Page sound was pretty common on a lot of Stooges records, MC5, The Undertones, etc. A lot of the not-so-popular garage rock from the late 60s/early 70s has that gnarly thin sound. I don't know if it was a trend, or if more budget frieendly recording situations dictated that kind of guitar sound, but it happened a lot.

One of these maybe?

I've just looked it up actually 'cos I could have sworn that Satisfaction was DI'd into the desk too leading to a similar minging tone. Turns out I was wrong!
Fuzz was pretty popular back then as they didn't have much else.

Yeah it was, even among the more mainstream stuff. I think anything Page did, everyone tried to copy, and since he used that Telecaster sound, it became a pretty sought after sound. I think he used a Tele in the studio and an SG live? Something like that.

Speaking of sounds....The reason I'm re-doing "Sympathy" again is because the last version I did was actually worse than the version before that. If I use this tune as a gauge on my progress, the last version was a step backwards. Unfortunately, there was a 2-3 year period where I was living with my girlfriend at the time. My "studio" in a few of the places we lived was always either a shitty, tiny room, or a big ugly sounding garage. So, unfortunately, there's a couple of years that I recorded a lot of shit, but it all sounds horrible, especially the stuff done in the garage.

I want to have a good, current version of "Sympathy". I can play it with my eyes closed at this point.

I might re-do "Amos Moses", too. I played it well and I like my version. But the drums especially sound like shit.

RAMI, I re-posted that track you asked about in the mixing clinic - take a look when you get a mo.

OK cool. I wanted to hear that. I have the music blasting into my gym right now for people working out, so I can't listen at the moment. I have to go to work soon and I'll listen when I get back later this afternoon.
