So, what is the etiquette on this thread?
Is it cool to put up rough mixes of songs to showcase guitar tones? I mean a whole tune, not like a snippet.
Cool or uncool? Don't want to piss off the power players that control the universe.

I got this thing (song) that's using a 69 plexi that's real loud. Its coming as soon as I transfer it into digital.
In the meantime, here is an experimental piece to test out a new CAD mic.(actually old equitec)
69 Les Paul with Seymour Duncan Seth Lovers >Into a 59 fender Vibroluxe> into an Avatar 1X12 cab with a Greenback. 57 on the cone and the CAD about 2 feet away.
Some may have heard this since I posted it a year ago as a test. I'm sure no one paid any attention, so it should be like brand new.
Anyway, Amp is at 7 with tone halfway up, vibrato off. Any changes regarding clean and overdriven are through volume on the guitar. No pedals or other shit.

I think you have a really good guitar tone in this. The wound guitar strings sound tight and focused while the treble unwound strings aren't shrill. It's kind of hard to achieve that.I got this thing (song) that's using a 69 plexi that's real loud. Its coming as soon as I transfer it into digital.

Gents, I've chucked another one in the mixing clinic - not quite a pre-vocal mix but nearly there - its missing something though. You guys have heard it, or bits of it, before but the whole thing has been re-tracked.

Since it's been so quite here, I thought I'd throw this up. I'm playing everything (as I'm not a drummer, please excuse my playing) and I only did one take for the vocals. But since this is about a tone thread, the solos go as follows; a Strat with Lollar Black Face pickups (bridge and middle pickups), then my 1990 Les Paul Custom (bridge position), then The Fool SG ('57 Classic in the bridge) and finally my Epiphone DOT (JB in the bridge).
All using a '66 Fender Basman, no effects/pedals:
Volume: 6.5
Treble: 10
Bass: 8.5
On the Weber Attenuator:
Low Mids Vol: 3
High Mids Vol: 3.5
2x12" closed back cab
SM-57 near the edge of the speaker cone, off axis less then an inch off the grill.
The rhythm track was done using my Strat through a Vox Tonelab SE direct into the computer and the bass is a Rickenbacker 4001 straight from a direct box to the computer.
The drums are live, everything mic'd and blended to taste later. All told, this took me about 3 hours to complete. I probably could have done it faster if I was an actual drummer

I'm not crazy about that rhythm sound, but all the leads seem nice in their own way, my personal faves being The Fool and the DOT sections. It's not surprising how much more deep and lively the mic'd speaker sounds are compared to the Tonelab.

Hey Bill, I've heard better sounding tones from you. Like Greg says, the leads sound fine. The rythms sound a bit choked or something.
On a side note....For a non-drummer, I can see you learned how to play pretty well. If I can give you some drum advice, you seem to have the chops necessary to play most rock/pop/blues. I'm impressed, actually. Just pay attention to your timing on your timing. The drums are ahead, then they're behind...Good thing they can't go left or right. Just kidding. They just wander a bit, I actually didn't know it was you playing until I read your post after listening. I thought it was a drummer from your band or something. So, you fooled me!

A few people mentioned the Epiphone (On the right side) sounded dark. I re-amped it again with a hopefully better sound. I re-recorded a few parts, too.
I always have to mention this: It's just a drum machine place holder. They will be replaced with real drums.

leads sound good .... like the strat with Lollars best ..... Custom sounds too gainy .... the fool sounds better for s distorted sound IMO .... the Dot sounds good too. I like ALL the lead tones except the Custom.
The rhythm and bass sounds need some work.
A nice 3 hour bit 'o' work!

I say ditch the direct in and just hang a mic in front of an amp and get a good sound coming out of the speakers...like you did with the lead. I have sworn off direct guitar recording. It's easier....you don't have to wear headphones and deal with a loud amp dominating the sound and struggle to hear everything else when recording guitar.
But, it just dosen't sound as good as hanging a mic in front of a speaker.

Man, I love the guitar tones you are getting. I don't think the Epi sounds dark. I think it sounds just right. I didn't hear the other version but nothing sounds dark or muddy here to me. It's all clean and sits just right.
