The New Tone Thread

That's cool. I always have my box connected too. So it's instantaneous when I record.

Extra tracks are never a problem. I hide my raw tracks, so I don't even see them unless I need to go back and re-track or re-amp something.

I actually lucked out with my interface. I never even thought of the extra outputs, I was an ampsim guy at the time. And it's actually capable of recording 6 tracks at a time, but it's only got 2 xlr/1/4" combo inputs. If I had a few pre-amps I could do more than 2 tracks, but I don't really need that, as I use fake drums anyway...I have been thinking of upgrading my interface & getting a kit, but that'll be way down the road, if it even happens...
 
Well that was weird. I've only been asleep about 7 hours and the threads gone a bit mental!!!

Hmmm, not meaning to use this thread as the MP3 mixing clinic, in fact I haven't been. I've been posting up a rough mix but it's been by way of experimenting with getting a tone to sit in a mix. If you guys are giving me suggestions on how to get a good tone I thought you'd actually want to hear me try and implement them.

Comments about songwriting and where to take songs next aren't helpful here though.. They're just annoying.

Don't worry about it man, it's cool IMO. How else are you gonna learn how to get the guitars to sit in a mix if you don't post it that way??? Again, don't worry about it man...

going back to tone. I'm surprised by how much of a difference it makes keeping my favourite mic spot but swapping between guitars. They do sit together much better.

RAMI, I'll listen to your tones on proper headphones later. I'm still in bed right now
 
RAMI - on my 2nd coffee and having a proper listen now.

Lead guitar doing all the hammers/pulls sounds great.
The guitar that comes over with the chords at 10s sounds a bit "dead" sounding to me and quite dark - its not just the lack of reverb 'cos you rarely seem to use reverb. When a similar sort of thing happens at 50s it doesn't have the same feel, probably 'cos there's more going on in the song - don't know whether its exactly the same tone here or not that's just brightened up by everything else that's going on.

Holy fuck, Carlos - the middle section is cool... although the change at 2:18 is a bit jarring, sounds like you've got a big change in guitar tones there - like completely different set of instruments comes in as opposed to the same instruments playing something different - crap explanation I know.

All minor shit that I can pick up though - I think your guitars sound pretty fucking great really.

EDIT: On a 2nd listen the transition out of the interlude wasn't quite as jarring, first time through it felt as if there was a stitched together bit of different tracks on different days - wasn't the case on the 2nd listen, probably as I was expecting it more. The way you got into it sounds great though.

Haha that's awesome! I doubt you've heard these guys, but it almost sounds like a NOFX song. They do a lot off rapid-fire locked in drum and guitar riffs. Almost like cheese metal, but just "punky" enough to keep it from being lame.

Anyway, I echo miner's comments. The guitars are a little muffled, subdued. Just a little. I think a little shine would wake them up.

Ha! Thanx. Yeah, that middle part comes out of nowhere. It will be a better transition with real drums. Right now there's no fill to or anything on the drums, just changes beats. I'll work on the rythm sounds to get it less dull.

Thanx. I don't know NOFX, but I've heard talk of them. I was actually thinking to myself that this isn't far from being too metal-ish, but it's also not far from being fake-punky, so I need to be careful when I add vocals as far as direction.

I'll see if I can bring those guitars to life with some EQ. If not, I'll re-track with the mic a little closer to the middle. I actually turned down the treble and presence on my amp just before recording. That might have done it.
 
NOFX are alright RAMI. They're not as good as, say, Bad Religion or Sprung Monkey but they're pretty good.

Anyway, I've been re-tracking another song this afternoon using the tone I've dialed in recently and two different guitars instead of fucking about with mic placement - its sounding good, so cheers with all your help with that. I actually have an EQ setting now called "Bobs EQ"

Hmmmm. I'd put NOFX a little notch above Bad Religion. NOFX gets the nod for fun factor. Their political commentary is very funny as opposed to BR's more serious gloomy cynicism. And NOFX murders Bad Religion live. It's not even close there. NOFX is hilarious live.

And Sprung Monkey sucks ass. I'd happily forgotten all about them. :laughings:
 
Haha, I was taking the piss with the Sprung Monkey suggestion. I definitely prefer BR though. But then I like things are bit morose!

Never saw NOFX, I did see Pennywise in the mid 90s though.
