The New Tone Thread

This is more like it - I moved my mic closer to the dustcap, took the gain down half a notch and the bass down a notch. Still gainier than the record for the reasons mentioned.

Where the hell is Dodsworth? He was supposed to be kicking ass in the tone thread, not fucking about in the sea on a fibreglass plank!

The second clip sounds much better. Still has that rubbly quality at the bottom though. Fuck knows what to do about it.

Well, without question, my two fave Pistols songs are "No Feelings" and "Bodies". Maybe I'll take a swing at one of those.

Ha! It was nearly "Bodies" that I chose, but I ended up going with "Vacant". Great stuff. :)

It would be good to compare our versions.

I'll try vacant. I know how to play it, but don't know HOW to play it. I don't know Steve Jones's licks and nuances and shit. I'm just gonna bang it out.

Haha, pretty good. Fuck this and fuck that I don't want a baby that looks like that.

My dad got kind of mad at me one time when I was a kid for listening to "Belsen Was a Gas" really loud on Easter sunday.

Here's my take on "Bodies".

Red crunch, Gain 5, everything else the same as previously.

That's gotta be my favourite Pistols song! There's still something weird with the clip though that I can't put my finger on on. Kind of like a fizzy buzzyness that I can hear right in the middle of my head! Greg might be able to spot in - I don't fucking know - but aside from that, sounds decent enough.

Have a laugh at this - I love my guitar chair - and I can rest my left hand on the radiator too:

---------- Update ----------

My dad got kind of mad at me one time when I was a kid for listening to "Belsen Was a Gas" really loud on Easter sunday.

Speaking of Easter - I've always thought its more of an Ironic Friday than a particularly good one.

Nice playing! It sounds like something written for Rockschool or something. Is it?

I don't know what the fizziness is - I can't hear it in the room. I appear to have accidentally nudged my micstand with my foot. It's a bit close to the centre of the speaker.

Haha nice vid. Man, you really fucking love those andertons guys, yeah?

haha, they're actually pretty helpful with the gear reviews and shit and they seem like decent guys, they were cool when I met them after their gig in Bristol last year - I was pretty pissed though. Suppose the point of the Anderton's videos is to give you mad GAS... which I'm managing to avoid... kinda.

I came across that tutorial video a few weeks ago when one of the other guys on here (Tad maybe?) was doing riff of the week tutorials as I thought it was a really good tutorial and really well explained. I learned is cos there are a couple of sections in it that are nothing like my usual guitar style, there's a long ascending section with loads of string skipping in it which I never do and I never normally go anywhere near fucking fretboard tapping! I'll record it again at some point when my hands are properly warm - I did about 10 takes of that and my forearm was fucking aching! Even on the one I posted there I fuck up the really fast pentatonic bit.

Its from a tutorial by Rabea Massaad, the big bloke who does the Anderton's videos with Rob Chapman.

That could be it - I had something similar at first with my old speaker - I just hadn't realised how fucking massive the dust-cap on the speaker was so my mic was slightly inside it and I had a fizzy harshness that I couldn't work out.

Y

I see - those are some nimble, spidery fingers you have there. BTW, it sometimes takes me ten takes to do the simple stuff. :)

Yeah, they're pretty long aren't they? Whenever I see my hands in photos I always think my fingers look like the legs off the facehuggers in the Alien films.

You do have long spindly shredder fingers.

I have stumpy powerchord hands.

My fingers aren't too bad, but my thumbs are short. I'd like to, occasionally, be able to hook my thumb over the top rock 'n' roll style for some low-slung action, but no dice. :D

I began to get that impression earlier, when I saw that pic with the plectrum in your hand. Your knuckles are like camel's knees.

haha. Camels knees! Excellent.

That plectrum is great by the way. Supposed to be virtually indestructable and won't wear either. The horn plectrum I had from Iron Age Guitars wore down pretty quickly.

I'm not a shredder! I suppose I should get back to recording some stuff which is more my kinda thing really.

Long fingers are rarely a drawback until you get above about the 17th fret though... and I don't go there very often at all.
