Here's another tone query. What effect do you lot thing your AI has on tone.. If any

Hi guys. Anybody mind if I hang out here for the time being? :)

Audio Interface? At the price range most of us have, the preamps are all very transparent and give similar results. Once you start with higher end preamps, they tend to colour the sound more and are used for specific purposes, rather than being general use like in home recordists' AIs.

OK, here's some raw tones, no mixing, no multi tracking. There's a few of them but I'd appreciate your help to get me heading in the right direction.

First my amps knobs aren't numbered but run from about 7 O'Clock to 5 O'Clock.
On all clips the Gain is at 9 O'Clock (that's lowish) but the preamp vol is at 3 O'Clock - that's pretty high.
The master stays on 12 on all clips but goes up to 3 O'Clock on the last clip.
ISF is Blackstar voicing. Full US would be 7 O'Clock, Full UK would be 5 O'Clock.
All recorded with an SM57 about an inch of the grill just off the edge of the dust-cap.

I'm still not entirely happy with any of them but aside from the one where I crank up the master I think they gradually get better but still need more work, so any help from a proper "tonal surgeon" like Greg, Uncle Bob, Bubba or RAMI would be nice.

View attachment 95366 My keys might be rattling on top of the amp in this one.

I've since added another with the Mooer Yellow Comp added with comp set to 12 and EQ set to 2 O'Clock.

LOL, I thought most of those tones sounded usable! I liked the Full UK Clip (no surprises there!) and the Mooer comp clip best. That's a great heavy tone but would probably need a little thinning in a recording. It would probably sound ace live.

Yeah, it sounds killer in the room, just sounds a bit rough recorded. Haha, I thought the full UK clip sounded like a bag of dicks. It's way too loose. It's ok when you're just using the preamp volume for crunch but as soon as you started adding the gain knob in you need to be using the yank side of the dial.

You'll actually have to started doing some recording now!

Ha ha! I'm doing plenty of recording - I have one in the clinic and a collab in the pipeline, plus an original that's going through a long gestation period. :D I don't have a massive presence in the on-topic forums, but I'm certainly not one of those losers that never records anything.

Perhaps Steen got sick of my face, so to speak. Anyroad up, I'll try to post some tones, soon. :D

AI - audio interface. Thanx ElTee - I was scratching me head on that as well.

I started with an M-audio midiman thing with two preamps. Sounded pretty clean. I later picked up an Echo Audiofire 10 which I believe is just an A/D converter - no controls whatsoever. With that I came straight off the mixing board - Mackie 1604 VLZPro. So I guess I was comparing the Mackie pres to the M-Audio. Mackie wins.

Bloody hell, just heard your LC cover. If I didn't know it wasn't a cover and it just came on I probably would have just thought it was an alternate take or something.

I've got so many songs of my own on the go at the moment I am trying to refrain from writing anything new. I am planning on sticking together a quick punk version of Mandinka at some point though.

Hey guys, been away for a few days & holy fuck!!!! I missed like 10 pages....lol...I'll catch up on listening to the tones tonight, & I'll post up some re-amps tomorrow. I've got my usual AT4 ampsim tones in like 3 songs, but I'm gonna re-amp 'em because I know they can sound better...

Shan: It's good man, honestly, it's hard to tell which is which sometimes man, no biggie....

Rami: Reading through the pages I missed, I see you're considering either AT3 or AT4, personally, I'd just spring for AT4 man, the amps & cabs in the new version are great. All the stuff that's in AT3 works in AT4, so you could buy the "basic" version of AT4, then add what you want in the custom shop thing, that way you don't have a bunch of shit you don't use (like I do....hahaha)...Just sayin'...If you have any questions I'd be glad to try to help you with it man....Something else to think about is the freebie ampsims. You could buy Recabinet 4 (which is great IMO & only costs $50...the basic version of AT4 is like $150...), & use the freebie ampsims, again, just sayin'...Recab 4 does sound great, but honestly I like AT4 better, to me it sounds more like a real mic'd cab, YMMV...I'm in the same boat about late-night recording man, so if there's anything I can do to help, lemme know....
